Fractal: Revista de Psicologia, ISSN 1984-0292, was the new name of the Journal of the Department of Psychology – UFF. It was created in 1989 as a local publication linked to the Department of Psychology at UFF. After almost 20 years of publication, the Editorial Board considered that the name of the Journal did not match the profile of the publication, which by then had gained prominence in the national scene of psychology publications. Thus, in 2008, the Journal of the Department of Psychology – UFF was renamed Fractal: Revista de Psicologia, intended for the publication of unpublished works by national and international authors, in Portuguese, Spanish, English, and French.

The abbreviation of its title is Fractal, Rev. Psicol., which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes, and bibliographic references and captions.

Since 2022, Fractal: Revista de Psicologia has adopted a continuous publication model, meaning that approved and edited articles are immediately published in an annual volume, without the need to close an issue or adhere to a specific frequency. Previously, the journal was published quarterly, in January, May, and September. In the new model, articles no longer have successive and sequential pagination and now feature an elocation-id, a unique electronic identifier for each article in the volume.

This journal follows the Open Access model, allowing unrestricted (including financial) virtual access to all scientific texts published by the journal.

Open access is the condition in which the copyright holder of an academic work grants rights of use to third parties using an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY), allowing immediate free access to the work and authorizing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles, track them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other legal purpose.

Open Science is a global movement that aims to make scientific research, its data, software, and publications accessible to everyone, promoting transparency, collaboration, and reproducibility. Fractal: Revista de Psicologia adopts a series of practices in line with this movement, such as the open access policy, the code of good practice for editors, and the use of social media to disseminate published works. In addition, it requires the precise indication of the role of each author in articles with multiple authors, encourages the sharing of analysis data sets, instruments, statistical analysis scripts, scripts, and additional materials, made available in open online repositories, such as SciELO Data, if they cannot be published in the work itself, information that must be indicated in the manuscript. Consequently, articles reporting research should indicate and reference the availability of the content underlying the research and the results obtained.

Also in line with Open Science practices, the journal offers authors and reviewers options for opening the peer review process, with or without identification of their names. Authorization to disclose the name may be given by the authors at the time of submission by completing the Open Science Compliance Form and by the reviewers on the Evaluation Form.

In the event of publication of the evaluations that formed the basis for the decision to publish the article, they may be edited by the journal's editorial board

Fractal: Revista de Psicologia is dedicated to complying with good practices regarding moral conduct consistent with scientific journal publishing. Any form of unethical behavior, as well as plagiarism in any instance, is not accepted by the journal. Authors who submit articles to the journal declare that their content is original and guarantee that the work has not been published or is not under review/evaluation in any other journal. It is also expected that all articles reporting research involving human subjects contain relevant information on ethical procedures, attaching proof of approval from the Ethics Committee when submitting.

Guided by the principles recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics – COPE (http://publicationethics.org/), we advocate ethical behavior by all parties involved in the publication process. Below we list some of the policies we have adopted in this regard.

Duties of the Editor:

• analyze all articles received, being responsible for rejecting or accepting articles based on reviews;
• ensure the desired quality standards, complying with the objectives of the journal and its respective sections;
• avoid malpractice and unethical behavior, especially plagiarism and fraudulent information;
• select reviewers/evaluators appropriately, considering their thematic affinity with the articles and the production and respectability of the academic reviewers/evaluators in the academic-scientific community;
• ensure that articles are peer-reviewed in order to guarantee the quality of scientific publication, justifying any significant deviation from the evaluation process;
•  evaluate submitted manuscripts based solely on their importance, originality, clarity, and relevance to the scientific field, without considering the race, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, ethnic origin, nationality, or political and/or ideological philosophy of the authors;
• prevent the disclosure of any information about a submitted manuscript, except to reviewers and editorial advisors;
• prevent the use of unpublished material disclosed in a submitted manuscript in their own research without the express written consent of the author;
• prevent commercial interests from compromising intellectual standards;
• take appropriate action when ethical complaints are made about a submitted manuscript or published article, being willing to publish corrections, clarifications, retractions, and apologies when necessary;
• refuse to evaluate manuscripts in which there are conflicts of interest due to competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies, or institutions linked to the manuscripts;
• ensure that published research material complies with internationally accepted ethical guidelines, reserving the right to seek guidance from the Scientific Committee appointed by this journal, if necessary;
• take all necessary measures in cases of suspected unethical conduct. This duty extends to both published and unpublished works.

Editorial duties regarding unethical behavior:

• any unethical behavior identified in scientific works published in Fractal: Revista de Psicologia may be brought to the editor's attention at any time, by anyone, provided there is sufficient information and evidence for an investigation to be initiated;
• all necessary attempts must be made to resolve the problem; in any case, the author must be given the opportunity to respond to any allegations;
• inform or notify the author or reviewer where it appears that there has been any misunderstanding or misapplication of acceptable standards;
• decide on retraction or formal withdrawal of publication from the journal.

Duties of Reviewers:

• hold a doctoral degree;
• assist the editor in making editorial decisions and, through communication, assist the author in improving the article;
• immediately notify the editor if they do not feel qualified to review the article or when they believe that immediate reading of the work will be impossible;
• treat works received for review by the editor or author(s) as confidential documents, and refrain from exposing manuscripts to third parties;
• consider the relevance, correctness, originality, timeliness of discussions and references, suitability to the field of knowledge, methodological rigor, and quality standards of the publication;
• complete all items on the evaluation form received along with the article to be evaluated;
• keep confidential any privileged information or ideas obtained through reading the manuscripts, not using them for personal gain;
• conduct reviews objectively, expressing their views clearly and supported by arguments;
• identify relevant published works that have not been cited by the authors;
• bring to the editor's attention any suspected plagiarism or self-plagiarism, pointing out any other published or submitted article that you know of that is substantially similar to the work under review;
• refuse to evaluate manuscripts in which you have conflicts of interest due to competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies, or institutions associated with the manuscripts.

Authors' Duties:

• At least one of the authors of the paper must hold a Ph.D.;
• be academic researchers engaged in serious and systematic work in their specific fields and subfields;
• declare, upon submission of the article, that its content is original, has not been published or submitted to any other publication, in any language;
• identify (if applicable) institutions and agencies that have financially supported the research;
• ensure that all articles reporting research involving human subjects contain relevant information on ethical procedures, attaching proof of approval by the Ethics Committee when submitting;
• present an accurate account of the work performed, as well as an objective discussion of its significance; the article must contain sufficient details and references to allow others to replicate the work;
• give due credit to the authors of the works and/or papers cited;
• not publish manuscripts that essentially describe the same research in more than one journal; submitting the same manuscript to more than one journal at the same time and/or publishing the same article in more than one journal constitutes unethical and unacceptable editorial behavior;
• list the names of all co-authors who made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the reported study. The lead author must ensure that all appropriate co-authors are included in the article; they must also ensure that all co-authors have seen and approved the final version of the manuscript and agreed to its submission for publication. People who participated in the research project should be listed as collaborators;
• immediately inform the journal editor or member of the Editorial Board of any significant error or inaccuracy in their published work and cooperate with the editor to correct the article;
• commit to working as reviewers for other articles in Fractal: Revista de Psicologia in their area of expertise

Fractal: Revista de Psicologia aims to stimulate dialogue with different areas of knowledge whose themes intersect with studies of subjectivity in areas that involve topics covered in the Graduate Program in Psychology at Universidade Federal Fluminense. It is a matter of recognizing the need for coexistence between different strands of research in the field of psychology, fueling constant debate as a way of encouraging scientific production.

Fractal: Revista de Psicologia accepts preprints as an option for authors who submit their manuscripts. This practice allows articles and other scientific communications to be disseminated immediately or in parallel with their evaluation and validation by journals. This accelerates the communication of research results, guarantees intellectual authorship, and allows authors to receive comments that contribute to improving their work before submitting it to a journal. The preprint text will be evaluated by a team of experts from the server on which it was deposited, who will verify that the manuscript complies with basic criteria regarding its structure and document types. If approved, it will receive a DOI and can be cited, facilitating greater speed and more interaction in scientific communication. Although the article may remain only in the preprint repository (if the author does not wish to send it to a journal), authors who opt for preprinting and subsequent or simultaneous submission to Fractal: Revista de Psicologia must: a) have their manuscript deposited exclusively on the SciELO Preprints server (https://preprints.scielo.org/index.php/scielo); and b) inform that the manuscript is deposited on the SciELO preprint server, its title and URL in the “Open Science Compliance Form” (document to be completed and attached as a supplementary file at the time of submission).

The manuscript review process is carried out in two stages:

1st stage of review - Compliance with standards
After submission, manuscripts are reviewed for compliance with the standards specified here in “Instructions to Authors.” In this stage, conducted by a team of editors and advisors, all items specified for manuscript preparation are checked, as well as the completeness of the submission metadata. When there are errors, authors will be notified and may resubmit their articles with corrections within fifteen (15) days.

2nd stage of evaluation – Peer review
In this stage, the co-editors evaluate the suitability of the manuscript to the scope of the journal and the overall quality of the text approved in the first stage.
Manuscripts approved at this stage are then monitored by the Fractal editorial team, who are responsible for assigning reviewers. Submissions are forwarded for peer review while preserving the identity of the authors and reviewers (double-blind review), unless the authors choose to open the review process, in accordance with the principles of Open Science.

The opinions issued by the reviewers contain justifications that may suggest approval for publication without changes, approval for publication with recommendations for changes, or non-recommendation for publication. After reviewing the revised versions, the editors make the final decisions on the manuscripts, including the need for further revisions. Authors will be informed of all stages. The editorial team reserves the right to make minor changes to the authors' text to streamline the process.

The openness of the peer review process involves the progressive opening of the peer review process, provided that the authors and/or reviewers agree. SciELO considers three options for progress in this regard. The first is the publication, at the end of the article, of the names of the editors responsible for the evaluation or the name of the editor-in-chief, an option already adopted by Fractal. The second is to offer reviewers the option of communicating directly with the author, with or without revealing their identities. The third is to disclose the reviews of approved articles, with or without identifying the reviewers. SciELO considers reviews to be a new type of literature that should be treated similarly to articles.

Authors may choose one or more means of opening up the peer review process offered by the journal. The options are: a) whether or not to publish the reviews of the approved manuscript, if the submitted article is accepted for publication; and b) whether or not to interact directly with the reviewers responsible for evaluating the manuscript.

The author's choices must be indicated on the Open Science Comliance Form.

Reviewers may also choose, on the Review Form, one or more means of opening the peer review process offered by the journal. The options are: a) whether or not to publish the reviews of the approved manuscript, if the submitted article is accepted for publication; and b) whether or not to interact directly with the author of the article under review.

Fractal: Journal of Psychology encourages the sharing of data generated during research, which is often not included in the submitted article. Research data includes texts, spreadsheets, statistics, experimental results, responses to closed-ended questionnaires, photographs, audio/video recordings, software, codes, methods, and other materials used or generated during the course of scientific research that serve as the basis for the results presented in manuscripts published in the journal. This data must be deposited at the time of manuscript submission to Revista Fractal via the SciELO Data platform. The submission of the dataset must follow the guidelines available in the SciELO Research Data Preparation Guide SciELO and the Research Data Deposit Guide. 

The objective is to facilitate the evaluation of the manuscript and contribute to the preservation and reproducibility of the content and research approved for publication. Exceptions are permitted in cases involving legal and ethical issues. Information regarding the availability (or lack thereof) of the content underlying the submitted articles must be included in the Open Science Compliance Form (a document to be completed and attached as a supplementary file at the time of submission). This sharing is the responsibility of the article authors.

All articles based on original research must be submitted with a section titled “Data Availability,” stating whether the dataset is available and where it can be accessed.

Authors must choose one of the suggested templates for this section.

Fractal: Revista de Psicologia does not charge authors a fee for submitting or publishing articles.

Fractal: Revista de Psicologia complies with the main guidelines of national and international organizations that serve as a reference for principles and good practices on ethics and negligence for scientific publications and is guided by the main ethical practices of Cope, the SciELO Guide to Good Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication, and the Principles of Transparency and Good Practice in Academic Publishing. The adoption of these guidelines assists editors in detecting possible fraud and malpractice in publishing.

When submitting an article, authors must: complete, sign, scan, and send the Declaration of Responsibility and Conflict of Interest as a supplementary document (step 4 of the article submission process). Conflicts of interest may be personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial in nature. They occur when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts

As part of the actions to promote academic integrity and prevent plagiarism in publications, before being sent for peer review, articles will undergo technical review for text similarity analysis, using the CopySpider application.
Up to 30% similarity in the text is considered acceptable; above that, after verification, the author is notified to make a revision and reduce this percentage to 30%.

In the case of self-plagiarism, the maximum allowed is 10% of the text for articles or 50% when it is the result of a master's dissertation or doctoral thesis. Above that, the article is returned to the authors so that they can make the necessary changes and resubmit the article to the Journal.

Cases of plagiarism reported to the Journal after the publication of articles will be analyzed by the editorial team and, if the complaint is confirmed, the article will be immediately removed from the Journal. Penalties may also be applied to the authors

Artificial intelligence (AI) or similar technologies do not qualify as authors. The use of AI to assist in writing and formatting texts must be carefully supervised by the author. No AI tool can be included as a co-author. If used to create content or assist in writing and editing, its use must be described. If it is part of the design or formal methods of the research, it should be included in the Methods section. Fractal: Revista de Psicologia recommends that authors and reviewers read the Guide to the Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools and Resources when using AI tools and content generated by AI applications in research communication.

The editorial team of Fractal, as well as authors who publish in the journal, should always observe the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER). The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines that guide the reporting of information on sex and gender in study design, data analysis, and the results and interpretation of findings. In addition, Fractal observes the gender equity policy in the formation of its editorial board.

In the case of texts dealing with research involving human subjects, pursuant to Law No. 14,874 of May 28, 2024, and Decree No. 12,651 of October 7, 2025, a document proving approval by the Ethics Committee or Commission of the institution where the research was conducted will be required.

Authors published by Fractal: Revista de Psicologia retain the copyright to their works, licensing them under Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY, an open license that allows articles to be reused and distributed without restriction, provided that the original work is correctly cited. In return, they grant the journal the right of first publication.

Website Responsibility:

Fractal: Revista de Psicologia reserves the right to make normative, spelling, and grammatical changes to the originals in order to maintain the cultured standard of the language, while respecting the authors' style.

Author responsibility:

The author(s) are solely responsible for the published study and hold the copyright for the publication of their articles. Fractal is solely responsible for evaluating the manuscript as a scientific publication vehicle. No additions or changes to authorship will be permitted during the evaluation stage or after the submitted text has been accepted.

Fractal: Revista de Psicologia uses Atribuição Creative Commons (CC-BY), a license that allows published articles to be reused without permission for any purpose, and encourages authors to archive their accepted manuscripts by publishing them on personal blogs, institutional repositories, and academic social media, as well as posting them on their personal social media, provided that a complete citation to the journal's website version is included.

The maximum number of authors is six. If there are more than six authors, you must submit a letter explaining the reason to the editors (fractal.revista.psi@gmail.com). No additional authors will be accepted after the article has been accepted.

Fractal: Revista de Psicologia accepts the following types of documents for submission, in Portuguese, Spanish, English, and French:

• Research reports
• Theoretical studies/Literature reviews
• Professional experience reports
• Interviews

• Reviews
• Preprints

• All submissions must meet the following requirements.
• At least one of the authors of the work must hold a doctoral degree. 
• The contribution is original and unpublished, and is not being evaluated for publication by another journal; otherwise, justification must be provided in “Comments to the editor.”
• A letter certifying approval by the institution's ethics committee is attached, in accordance with Law No. 14,874, of May 28, 2024, and Decree Law 12,651, of October 7, 2025, of the Federal Government, if the text refers to research involving human subjects. Or inform that the research does not require such approval.
• Files for submission are in Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, or RTF format (provided they do not exceed 2MB).
• URLs for references were provided when necessary.
• The text is double-spaced; A4 size (210mm x 297mm); 12 points font; Times New Roman font; with all pages numbered. Figures and tables are inserted in the text, not at the end of the document as attachments.
• The text follows the style standards and bibliographic requirements described in the Guideline for Authors.
• The identification of authorship of the work has been removed from the file and from the Properties option in Word, thus ensuring confidentiality if submitted for Blind Peer Review.
• The Open Science Compliance Form must be completed and submitted as a supplementary document.
• Authors are aware that, due to the large volume of articles submitted, the publication of national articles in this journal may exceed the desired deadline.
• The author is aware that failure to meet these conditions may result in the rejection of the submission at any time during the evaluation process.

Fractal: Revista de Psicologia uses the CREDiT taxonomy structure https://credit.niso.org/. All authors must describe their participation in the preparation of the manuscript using the CREDIT form available in the “Submission Conditions.”

• Ensure that the submission is original and unpublished, i.e., the work cannot have been previously published and/or submitted simultaneously to another journal; to this end, we recommend filling out the PDF Declaration of Responsibility and Conflict of Interest, which must be signed and digitally attached to the system.
• Check that the abbreviated citations in the body of the text and in footnotes (author, year of publication, and, when applicable, page) are complete in the references at the end of the text, according to ABNT standards. All references in electronic format (journals, e-books, digital theses, and dissertations) must correctly indicate the full URL at the end of the reference. Very long URLs should be shortened using: https://bitly.com/. All links must be active.
• Ensure that you have registered to submit your ORCID iD

Text configuration:

• Word file (doc. or docx. extension), font: Times New Roman 12; page setup: A4; margins of 3 cm; line spacing: 1.5; indentation of 1.25 on the first line; text alignment: justified; page numbering: upper right corner
• Font type: The text configuration should be Times New Roman 12, justified;
• Acronyms and abbreviations: Acronyms and abbreviations should be in parentheses and preceded by their full meaning when first used in the text.
• Foreign words: Foreign words, Latin expressions, and titles of books and periodicals should be written in italics. For emphasis, use double quotation marks.
• Abbreviated citations in the body of the text and in footnotes (author, year of publication, and, when applicable, page) should be complete in the references at the end of the text.
• Tables, graphs, and charts (in editable format, i.e., created in Word) should be numbered and inserted in the space provided for them with their respective sources.
• Figures (in jpeg or png format – 600 dpi resolution) must be included in the Word file.
• Articles must be submitted without any identification of authorship. To this end, authors must correctly fill in their User Profile information and also the information in Step 3 (Submission Data) of the OJS platform (including full name, email, institution/affiliation, country, and a brief biography of each author of the article) and remove any excerpts and information from the article that could facilitate identification of authorship.
• Cover Sheet: when submitting the article, authors must send the complete metadata, via the online system, using the form, containing:
• Title, keywords (3 to 5 words), and abstract in Portuguese, Spanish, and English.
• Full name of each author;
• Affiliation of each author (with University, City, State (if applicable), Country);
• Email address of each author;
• Indicate which of the authors is the corresponding author;
• ORCID of each author;
• Contribution of each author to the manuscript: Fractal adopts the specification system based on the CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy) system;
• Abstract: in general terms, they should inform: theme/problem, objective, methodology, results, and conclusion. Abstracts should contain between 150 and 200 words.

Illustrations (tables, figures, photographs, graphic drawings, maps, flowcharts, diagrams, organizational charts, and others) must be of sufficient quality for good graphic reproduction (minimum resolution of 600 dpi) and inserted in the text, rather than at the end of the document as attachments. They should be identified at the top with the designating word, i.e., the type of illustration, followed by its order of occurrence in the text, in Arabic numerals (e.g., Table 1, Table 2, Figure 1, Figure 2, etc.). At the bottom, it is mandatory to identify the source of the illustration (even if it is your own work).

Citations will be indicated in the body of the text, in parentheses, in accordance with NBR 10520:2023.

Quotations in the text are transcribed in double quotation marks in the case of direct or short textual quotations of up to 3 lines, incorporated into the paragraph. In the case of long direct or textual quotations of more than 3 lines, they are incorporated into a separate paragraph, indented 4 cm from the left margin, without quotation marks.
Explanatory notes, restricted to the minimum necessary, should be presented at the bottom of the page.
References should be presented at the end of the text, in accordance with ABNT standard NBR 6023:2002. Authors' names should be written in full (no abbreviations).
