ABOUT THE JOURNAL

 

Brief Background

 

História, Ciências, Saúde – Manguinhos is a publication of the Casa de Oswaldo Cruz, a division within the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation that is devoted to research, teaching, documentation and communication of the history of public health and of biomedical sciences in Brazil, and to preserving the Foundation’s history.

The journal publishes papers of historical merit with original focus. It welcomes online submissions of articles in Portuguese, Spanish and English. História, Ciências, Saúde – Manguinhos was launched in July 1994. Since 1998, it has also been available in a digital version, and in 2000 became part of the SciELO portal. Since 2006, some articles accepted for publication in Portuguese and Spanish have been translated into English and released in the e-journal. The journal has maintained a presence on social media since 2013, publishing content and interviews related to articles via its blog and other communication channels. In 2015, the journal began receiving submissions and issuing evaluations online. To strengthen editorial transparency and adhere to the concept of open science, in 2021 it began accepting submissions of preprints and allowing the publication of peer reviews (with or without the identification of reviewers). In 2023, the journal inaugurated a continuous publication format.

 

 

Open Access

 

História, Ciências, Saúde – Manguinhos follows the open access model, allowing virtual access without restrictions (including financial restrictions) to all the scientific texts published by the journal.

Open access allows the copyright owners of scholarly research to let third parties have rights through an open license (Creative Commons Attribution CC-BY). This license provides free and immediate access to the materials, and allows users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, use for research, or link the complete text of articles, track them for indexing, turn them into data for software, or use them for any other legal purpose.

The journal História, Ciências, Saúde – Manguinhos encourages authors to deposit their texts in an institutional repository and promote the published article on their personal or academic social media.

Any manuscript submitted to História, Ciências, Saúde – Manguinhos must be accompanied by a completed Open Science Compliance Form.

História, Ciências, Saúde – Manguinhos is committed to sustaining and promoting ethical behavior in the practices that guide scientific research and publication. It therefore rejects all behaviors that characterize poor editorial practice, such as breaches of ethics, plagiarism and fraud. Additionally, the journal is a member of and adheres to the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), endorses the integrity guidelines of the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico, and recommends use of the SciELO’s Guidelines on best practices for strengthening ethics in scientific publication. We recommend that authors read these documents before submitting their manuscript for publication in the journal.

História, Ciências, Saúde – Manguinhos publishes texts that address topics in health and life sciences from a historical perspective, encompassing various fields related to health practices and the production of knowledge in its social, political, and cultural dimensions. The journal also publishes articles on the communication of science and the preservation and management of cultural heritage in the realm of science and health.

EDITORIAL POLICY

 

Preprints

 

In line with the open dissemination of knowledge, beginning in 2021 História, Ciências, Saúde – Manguinhos has allowed the submission of articles previously published on reliable preprint servers that satisfy academically recognized criteria, such as SciELO Preprints, SocArXiv and Zenodo. These criteria include storage of articles that reports the results of research, revisions and essays ready for submission to a journal; prior moderation of articles; assignment of a DOI; and linkage to the final published article.

 

 

Peer review

 

Evaluation of submissions differs, depending on the sections to which the manuscript has been submitted. The preliminary evaluation consists of:

  • Verifying compliance with formal requirements for submissions and for the section in question. Manuscripts that do not comply with these requirements will be rejected (desk reject).
  • Verifying whether the manuscript complies with the journal's scope. Manuscripts that do not comply with this requirement will be rejected (desk reject).

Manuscripts approved during the preliminary evaluation will be sent out for review and assessed according to the criteria of each section. The name of the editor responsible for the evaluation process is indicated in the published article.
Except for the Book Reviews section, all manuscripts undergo at least one double-blind peer review (in which the identities of reviewers and authors are concealed from each other throughout the review process). However, in accordance with the open science principles, the journal offers authors and reviewers the option to disclose their identities after the review process.
If the author has submitted the manuscript to a preprint server, or has declared on their Open Science Compliance Form that they are willing to reveal their identity, the evaluation will be open or single-blind.
Manuscripts submitted to the Images and Sources sections, as well as science communication manuscripts, are evaluated by the respective section editor (editorial review) and by at least one external reviewer (double-blind review).
Manuscripts submitted to the Interviews, Debate, and Research Note sections are evaluated by the Editor-in-Chief (editorial review) and by at least one external reviewer (double-blind review).
Manuscripts accepted to the Book Reviews section are evaluated by the section editors  (editorial review).
Manuscripts accepted for preliminary review will be evaluated based on: (1) originality, (2) methodology grounded in historiographical methods, and (3) relevance and contribution to the thematic field.
Reviewers may request access to the data and other materials underlying the manuscripts.  Reviewer evaluations may recommend: (1) approval, (2) review for improvement, or (3) rejection of the manuscript. Based on the review(s), the Editor-in-Chief may approve, request revisions, or reject the manuscript.
Revised versions undergo a new evaluation by the Editor-in-Chief or by another reviewer. As many rounds of review as necessary may take place before a final decision is reached. The Editor-in-Chief approves or rejects the revised version based on the most recent evaluation.
In all sections, the final decision falls with the Editor-in-Chief.

 

 

Open Data

 

During the manuscript submission process, or after its approval, we recommend that the authors deposit the data connected with the research in a reliable repository, if legally and ethically possible.

The following can be considered research data: the research proposal; reports submitted to funding agencies; a description of the archives used; tables, figures and statistical information not used in the article; and recordings or transcripts of oral interviews. If the author has already stored the research data in a repository, this should be mentioned in the Open Science Compliance Form.

All research data used in the manuscript that are already public must be properly cited and referenced

The journal has diamond open access status, meaning it does not charge fees for submission, processing, or publication

 

 

Policy on ethics, poor practice, errata and retraction

 

História, Ciências, Saúde – Manguinhos is committed to sustaining and promoting ethical behavior in the practices that guide scientific research and publication. It therefore rejects all behaviors that characterize poor editorial practice, such as breaches of ethics, plagiarism and fraud. If, at any moment, problems and/or poor practices are detected in published documents, whether through a complaint, information provided by the authors themselves, or detection by the editorial board, an investigation will be conducted. Of special note among the poor practices subject to investigation are: redundant publication; problems in authorship/contribution statement; non-declared conflict of interest; fabrication/manipulation of data and/or images; plagiarism; manipulation of the evaluation; and ethical violation.

Policy on Conflict of Interest

 

Authors of manuscripts submitted to História, Ciências, Saúde – Manguinhos must indicate whether there was any conflict of interest in conducting their research. Conflicts of interest may be personal, commercial, political, academic, financial, or other. If there is no conflict of interest, authors should state the following: “There was no conflict of interest in this study.” Manuscripts are not rejected solely on the basis of conflict of interest.

In addition, authors must indicate on the manuscript any financial support received during the course of the study and must describe the contributions involved in developing the research.

Reviewers are also responsible for declaring potential conflicts of interest when they agree to evaluate a manuscript. When an assistant editor or section editor has any potential conflict of interest in relation to a manuscript they have been given to assess, they must state this conflict of interest to the Editor-in-Chief, who will determine how to proceed.

Using plagiarism detection software

 

História, Ciências, Saúde – Manguinhos does not tolerate plagiarism in submitted manuscripts. Texts sent to the journal will be submitted to plagiarism detection software.


Manuscripts are submitted to plagiarism detection at least once prior to their approval. If any similarity is detected that requires clarification, the author(s) will be given a deadline to respond to the questions raised. The Editor-in-Chief, in conjunction with the editorial board, will be responsible for deciding how to proceed in each case.

Cases of plagiarism may lead to the rejection of the manuscript at any stage of the evaluation process.

 

 

Use of artificial intelligence

 

História, Ciências, Saúde – Manguinhos allows the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, as long as they are used ethically and ensure the integrity of the research. These tools may be used as a supplement in the process of drafting the article, but not as a substitute; AI tools can assist in bibliographic research, in revising the text, and in improving titles and abstracts. AI cannot replace the work of the author in analyzing and interpreting the data, since this would compromise authorship.

Both authors and reviewers must report use of AI tools when submitting materials to the journal. Authors must declare the use of these technologies in the cover letter, the abstract, and the introduction section.

Authors and reviewers are responsible for the accuracy and integrity of any content generated with the assistance of AI.

Issues of sex and gender

 

História, Ciências, Saúde – Manguinhos and its authors shall always follow the SAGER guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research. Additionally, the journal strives for gender equity in the makeup of its editorial board.

 

 

Research ethics involving human subjects and informed consent to participate in research

 

In the case of manuscripts that involved research with human subjects, authors must follow the specific recommendations, laws, and/or standards of the country where the research was conducted and/or funded. Research should be conducted in accordance with the ethical practices and recommendations of its pertinent area/sub-area, as described by COPE and in the Belmont Report.

All research involving human subjects must have a consent agreement signed by the participants, and this document must be submitted by the authors along with the manuscript.

Authors hold the copyright to the manuscripts they submit. They grant História, Ciências, Saúde – Manguinhos the right to publish said texts in accordance with the CC-BY open access license adopted by the journal, i.e. Creative Commons (CC-BY) Attribution 4.0 International.

INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

 

Authorship and collaborations

 

For the Historiographic Review section, authors must hold a doctoral degree. For other sections, manuscripts will be accepted from those with doctorates and doctoral students; authors with only a master's degree must submit together with a co-author who holds a doctorate.

História, Ciências, Saúde – Manguinhos follows the recommendation of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) that authorship be attributed to contributors who meet these four criteria:

  • Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work; AND
  • Drafting the work or reviewing it critically for important intellectual content; AND
  • Final approval of the version to be published; AND
  • Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

Authors (whether individual or coauthored) must wait two years between submission of manuscripts, regardless of whether the manuscript was accepted or rejected. Exceptions can be made in the case of book reviews or collaborations requested by the Editor-in-Chief. 

Submissions signed by more than one author must inform each author’s contribution on the cover page, in accordance with the following categories from CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy):

  • Conceptualization: formulation and definition of research goals and aims.
  • Methodology: development or design of methodology.
  • Investigation: conducting research, including data collection.
  • Data curation: categorization of data.
  • Formal analysis: data analysis and interpretation.
  • Writing (original draft): writing the initial draft of the manuscript.
  • Writing (review and editing): critical review and writing of the modified version
 

 

Sections

 

Journal content is organized into the following sections (the maximum word count includes text, notes, tables, captions and references):

Analysis
Articles based on research in topics of interest to História, Ciências, Saúde – Manguinhos, in dialog with the historiography and literature related to the theme of the article (up to 9,000 words).

Interviews
Interviews with individuals whose professional careers are relevant to the history of science or of health (up to 6,000 words).

Images
Texts based on images, photographs, etc., in black and white or color, accompanied by captions and an introductory text (up to 10 images and 5,000 words).

Sources
This section is intended for materials that disseminate information on libraries, archives, collections, or transcribed documents relevant to research on the history of science or health, described or analyzed in an introductory text of up to 5,000 words.

Debate
Historical or contemporary topics proposed by the editor or collaborators and debated by specialists, who provide their points of view (up to 6,000 words).

Research Notes
Brief preliminary report about an ongoing research project, focusing on hypotheses, progress, and challenges, also including source analysis, techniques and methods, and expected developments (up to 3,000 words).

Historiographic Review
Articles that examine historiographic production on topics of relevance to the history of science and health, science communication, and historical and cultural heritage in science and health (up to 10,000 words).

Reviews
Critical analyses of works published in the preceding two years that connect their arguments with contemporary debates, addressing methodology, documentary sources and the contribution of the work to the development of the field (up to 1,000 words). There should be no academic supervisory relationship between the reviewer and the author of the work reviewed.

Letters
Comments or critiques of articles published in earlier issues of the journal (up to 1,000 words).

Submission of manuscripts

Submissions are welcome year-round. All submissions, regardless of section, must be made through the online submission management system.

Submissions that do not comply with the publication guidelines specified in “Preparing manuscripts” will be rejected. Additionally, articles that are a simple extract from a thesis or dissertation or that have excessive writing errors will be returned to authors.

Editor-in-Chief, the executive editor, and members of the editorial staff cannot submit articles to the Analysis or Research Notes sections.

Guest editors of dossiers, assistant editors, and section editors can publish articles in the journal and will be subjected to double-blind peer review.

Supplements

Proposals for supplements should be submitted to the Editor-in-Chief, pursuant to these guidelines. Proposals will be judged by the Editor-in-Chief and assistant editors, based on academic relevance and journal scope. História, Ciências, Saúde – Manguinhos publishes at least one supplement every year.

Preparing manuscripts

 História, Ciências, Saúde – Manguinhos accepts contributions to all sections in Portuguese, Spanish, and English. Manuscripts should be submitted in DOCX or RTF format.
The text must be formatted in Times New Roman font, size 12, with 1.5 line spacing.
Manuscripts for all sections must be accompanied by a cover page that states:

  • Title;
  • Abstract in the language of the manuscript no more than 110 words long, explaining the objectives, chronological and spatial frameworks of the research, methodology and principal argument of the article;
  • Authors should provide three to five keywords representative of the contents of the article, in the language of the manuscript. We suggest using Health Science Descriptors;
  • Name of each author;
  • Institutional affiliation of each author;
  • City, state and country of the institution;
  • Authors ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID);
  • E-mail address of each author and indication of the corresponding author;
  • Conflicts of interest;
  • Information referring to funding and acknowledgments.

No other text in the manuscript should make it possible to identify the author(s).

Manuscripts for the Reviews section should have a different title than the work reviewed, and no more than four references. The manuscripts must contain the complete reference citation for the work, including the number of pages. An image of the cover must be provided in a separate file, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi, in JPEG, TIFF or PNG format.

Images, figures, tables and graphs

Illustrations include tables, figures, prints, graphs and drawings in general. All illustrations should be provided in files separate from the main text. The suggested location where each illustration should be inserted, along with its caption and source, must be noted in the body of the manuscript. Only four (4) illustrations will be published per article (except for the Images section), and must be accompanied by the respective authorization for publication.
Images should have a minimum actual resolution of 300 dpi (not interpolated). They should be of natural size and saved in JPEG, TIFF, or PNG format with RGB color.

Tables and graphs should be editable. Tables should be in Word or Excel files, while graphs and underlying numerical data should be in Excel.

Color, size, and/or formatting (bold, italics or underlining) should not be used to indicate different information, since text-reading software does not identify these differences.

We recommend a maximum of five columns and ten rows in tables and graphs. Mixed, divided, and blank rows or columns should be avoided. In captions, avoid symbols or abbreviations.

In graphs, we suggest using sufficient contrast so that differences will be visible to low-vision readers as well as when printed in grayscale or black and white. Choose colors that are acceptable to readers with color blindness, avoiding red (especially when combined with green).

To verify contrast, we suggest the Color Contrast Analyzer, which can be used with your browser’s automatic translation function.

Rules of zoological and botanical nomenclature should be carefully followed; the same applies to abbreviations and conventions adopted in specialized fields.

Citations

In-text citations should indicate the author, year, and page of the citation. All quotations from works in other languages must be translated into the language of the manuscript; authors may choose to include the original in a note. Quotations of up to five lines should be presented in the main text, enclosed in double quotation marks. Quotations of more than five lines should be single-spaced in a separate, indented paragraph with a 3-cm margin.
Authors should use double quotation marks rather than italics or bold to set off or emphasize terms or expressions. Italics are used only to mark foreign words and the titles of books or periodicals. To emphasize a word or passage within a quotation, use single quotation marks.

Notes

Notes (maximum of 12) should be explanatory, numbered using Arabic numerals, and inserted as endnotes using the endnote function of the word processing program. Notes should not be used for citing documents or works.

References

All works or documents cited in the main text must be listed in a separate section, entitled References, never in a footnote or endnote. The references list primary and secondary sources together, and are based on the NBR 6023/2025 standard of the Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas (ABNT). References should appear in alphabetical order by author’s last name. Works by the same author should be listed in chronological order from most to least recent. When an author has more than one work published the same year, distinguish them by placing a letter, in alphabetical order, immediately after the year (for example: 1980a, 1980b).

Authors’ first names should be written in full.

Do not abbreviate journal names

Titles of books and journals should be italicized. Titles of book chapters and articles should appear between double quotations in the main text, but without any special punctuation in the references.
