About the journal



The Brazilian Journal of Special Education (Revista Brasileira de Educação Especial) is a quarterly publication maintained by the Brazilian Association of Researchers in Special Education (Associação Brasileira de Pesquisadores em Educação Especial - ABPEE), which was created in 1993 in the city of Rio de Janeiro, during the 3rd Education Seminar.

ABPEE’s Headquarters is mobile, accompanies the elected Executive Board and will have as temporary residence the same professional address as the President, during his/her management.

The purpose of the Journal is the dissemination of knowledge in Special Education and related areas with a quarterly periodicity.

It publishes original papers, mainly of research, but it opens space for essays, review papers, reviews and interviews.

The abbreviation of its title is Rev. bras. educ. espec., which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes, references and bibliographical details.

Instructions to authors



1 The Brazilian Journal of Special Education publishes papers of the partner-members of ABPEE, whose focus is Special Education. The receiving of the papers is in continuous flow according to order of arrival. The evaluation period may take from one to six months. The deadline for publication can take from 12 to 18 months.

The online journal is open to the entire scientific community through SciELO. To ensure a democratic space in the journal, each author and/or coauthor may publish only one paper per year/issue.

2 The collaborations can be presented as:
2.1 Research report;
2.2 Theoretical essay;
2.3 Literature review;
2.4 Review;
2.5. Interviews.

3 The papers must be unpublished (preferably in Portuguese, English or Spanish), and the journal shall be solely responsible for its publication. They must meet the following criteria:

3.1 Adequacy to the scope of the journal;
3.2 Scientific quality, attested by the Editorial Committee and after consulting the Advisory Board;
3.3 Compliance with these guidelines;
3.4 Once accepted, the papers may undergo non-substantial alterations (re-paragraphing, grammatical corrections and stylistic adjustments) in the text editing stage.

3.5 Reviews should contain no more than two pages and should be written by no more than two authors. Only those essays whose year of publication of the work is the year of publication of the journal or immediately prior to publication will be accepted. For example, if the journal is being published in 2012, the work must have been published in 2012 or 2011.

4 Acceptance and revision of the texts: the papers received are sent (excluding the name of the authors) to two reviewers belonging to the Advisory Board of the ABPEE who will indicate the acceptance, refusal or reformulations required. In case of opinions contrary to acceptance, the paper will be analyzed by the editors that define or not its publication based on the indications of the opinions. The revision of technical standardization is carried out by the editors.

5 There is no remuneration for the works.

6 There is no submission or paper evaluation fee for the journal.

7 The review of the papers occurs in two stages. In the first, two reviewers of the Editorial Committee will do a screening to verify the compliance with editorial standards. In the second stage, two reviewers of the advisory board will assess the merits of the paper content. Should one of the reviewers deny the publication, the paper will be submitted to a third reviewer. If two reviewers reject the publication, the paper will be denied.

The Journal adopts the Turnitin software for identification of plagiarism and/or self-plagiarism.
8 RBEE is committed to complying with ethical issues related to papers based on the following documents: a) Resolution CNE No. 466/2012 (Ethics in research with human beings); b) CNPq documents – Ethics and integrity in scientific practice (http://www.memoria.cnpq.br/normas/lei_po_085_11.htm).

Form and preparation of manuscripts



1 Identification: cover sheet containing the title (in Portuguese and English and Spanish);  short title (in Portuguese) author (academic/professional title, institution, department, when applicable), full address of all authors and contact email.

2 The abstract should be informative, explaining the objective, methodology, results and conclusions, when it comes to research reporting. It should contain 250 words, no paragraphs and no quotes from authors and dates.

3 Keywords: must be presented after the abstract (minimum of three and maximum of five words). INEP’s  site  Thesaurus Brasileiro da Educação should be used: www.inep.gov.br.

4 Abstracts in English and Spanish should be presented right after the abstract in Portuguese, following the same guidelines mentioned above.

5 Text, theoretical essay and literature review: must be organized in: Introduction, Development and Conclusion, without numeration, being able to receive subdivisions, equally not numbered. In the case of reports, they should have the following sections: Introduction, Method, Results, Discussion and Conclusions (with numbering).

Regarding book reviews and theses, the text must contain all the information for the identification of the work commented.
Note: Use bold only in titles or subtitles. If there is a need to emphasize expressions or words, use italic instead of underlined or bold. The use of quotation marks, according to the rules of the American Psychological Association [APA] 6th edition (2010), should be used only in bibliographical quotations in the text of up to 40 words.

6 Grant: mention of financial support received (at the beginning of the paper).

7 Acknowledgments: only if absolutely indispensable (at the beginning of the paper, after approval).

8 Illustrations (tables, graphs, drawings, maps and photographs): must have their inclusion indicated  and inserted in the text and also presented separately and in material that allows reproduction.

9 Quotations:

9.1 Notes: explanatory notes1 need to be arranged as footnotes, through the use of superscript numbers in the body of the text.

10 Quotations in the text:

10.1 Embedded citations in the text within the paragraph: the identification of the citations (surname of the author, year) should appear right after related citations. The author’s name, when inside and outside the parentheses should only come with the first letter capitalized, followed by the year of publication. Ex.: It has been identified in several studies this conception (Farris, 1979; Henry & Jacobson, 1980; Vertuan, 1989),  proving Moura’s (1979) confirmation.

10.2 Every time the quotation is literal or specific  to an excerpt of the work, and has less than 40 words, it should appear in quotation marks within the paragraph. Ex.:

Special didactics appears as a specific teaching practice of a certain content of teaching, and its necessity, according to Boulos, “is affirmed, since each subject and each school level presents their ‘own peculiarities’ and their concrete problems” (apud Warde, 1992, p. 50).

10.3 Every time the quotation is literal or specific to an excerpt of the work, and has more than 40 words, it should appear with a four-centimeter left indentation in a smaller font, detached in an isolated paragraph, with no quotation marks or Italics:

Pernambuco indicates that practice means

[...] to be working the mediations between propositions originated from different scientific knowledge that intervene on the concrete situation that is studied. At the same time, from this interaction as it does, new questions are posed, new knowledge and new organizations of old knowledge become necessary  (1994, p. 92).

10.4 Citation of authors in the text.
10.4.1 Citation of two authors. Ex.:
a)  Out of brackets : Barbosa and Marinho-Araújo (2010);
b)  Within parentheses: (Barbosa & Marinho-Araújo, 2010).

10.4.2 Citation up to five authors in the text. Ex:
a)  First citation: (Carnevale, Alexander, Davis, Rennick, & Troini, 2006);
b)  Other citations by the same authors and work: Carnevale et al. (2006).

10.4.3 Citation with more than five authors in the text. Ex.: Cassins et al. (2007, p. 5-6).

10.4.4 Citation with institutional authorship that contains acronym  Ex.:
a)  First citation: American Psychological Association [APA] (2010);
b) Other quotes by the same author and work: APA (2010).

10.5 Citation of legislative documents and technical standards in the text. Ex.: Law No. 13.146 (2015) or ( Law No. 13.146, 2015).

11 References:

11.1 They will obey the APA standards of 2010. They will be listed at the end of the text with the title REFERENCES, in bold. This list of sources (books, papers, etc.) should appear in alphabetical order by author’s last name, without numbering, without line spacing, without indentation, with displacement of 0.75 cm, spacing after 12 pt and justified.

11.2 Books: Enter Surname, N. A. (author’s names abbreviated in upper case and last name only with the first letter capitalized) (Year in parentheses after the name of the author). Title and subtitle (in italics) (Include the edition number, if any, full stop, write ed. in lower case) City: Publisher.

12 Presentation of papers: (read all the items before sending the paper).

12.1 Papers should only be submitted in the DOC. FORMAT to the following address:

12.2 Before entering the homepage to send the paper open a folder on your computer with the following files scanned:

a) File with the manuscript without identification of the authors (main document).
b) Cover sheet with name, COMPLETE address and e-mail of ALL authors.
c) Forwarding letter signed by ALL authors (according to Template).
d) Letter of copyright transfer agreement signed by ALL authors.
e) Copy of letter of approval from the ethics committee in the case of research report (the journal does not publish research reports without this document, whether by national or international author).
f) ORCID digital identifier.

APA technical rules, check if:

  • meets the rules for bibliographic citation;
  • meets the rules on references;
  • authors cited in the text are not missing in the references;
  • references from authors that are cited in the text are not missing;
  • the printed text follows the formatting rules of the journal.

Content rules, check if:

  • proofreading was carried out satisfactorily;
  • the keywords of  INEP’s  site  Thesaurus Brasileiro da Educação were used: www.inep.gov.br. (see guiding paper);
  • the abstract meets the standards specified by the journal (see guiding paper);
