EDITORIAL POLICY

Preprints

In accordance with the purposes of Open Science, the Journal allows the corresponding author, at the time of submission or later, to deposit the manuscript, preferably, in the SciELO Preprints server.

The identification of whether the article submission is a preprint must be indicated by the authors at the time of submission, by uploading to the journal’s submission platform the Form on Compliance with Open Science.

Peer Review Process

All manuscripts submitted to the Revista Brasileira de Entomologia (RBE) undergo a single-blind peer review coordinated by the Editorial Board. Submissions are first screened for scope, originality, and compliance with the journal’s guidelines. Manuscripts considered suitable are then evaluated by at least two independent reviewers with expertise in the subject area.
In line with SciELO’s criteria for informed peer review, the final published article will always include the name of the editor(s) responsible for the evaluation process.
•    Reviewer Suggestions – Authors may suggest potential reviewers during submission by providing full name, institutional affiliation, and e-mail address.
•    Editorial Discretion – The Editorial Board may consider these suggestions, but the final selection of reviewers is its sole responsibility.
•    Editorial Decision – The Editor-in-Chief, in consultation with Associate Editors when appropriate, makes the final decision on acceptance or rejection of manuscripts.

Open Data

All manuscripts must include a Data Availability Statement. Authors are encouraged to deposit datasets, codes, and supplementary material in trusted repositories and cite them in references.

Fees and Financial Sustainability

The Revista Brasileira de Entomologia (RBE) charges an Article Processing Charge (APC) for the publication of manuscripts. No submission fees are applied.

  • For corresponding authors who are members of the Brazilian Society of Entomology (SBE):
    • Brazilian authors: R$ 650 per manuscript
    • Foreign authors: US$ 150 per manuscript
  • For corresponding authors who are not members of the Brazilian Society of Entomology (SBE):
    • Brazilian authors: R$ 1,500 per manuscript
    • Foreign authors: US$ 300 per manuscript

Discounts are therefore granted to members of the Brazilian Society of Entomology.

RBE follows the SciELO Declaration on Financial Sustainability, which recommends transparency in financing models, ensuring the long-term sustainability of journals while maintaining their commitment to Open Access.

Ethics and Misconduct, Corrections and Retractions

RBE is committed to upholding the highest ethical standards in scholarly publishing and adheres to international best practices. Cases of misconduct, such as plagiarism, data fabrication, or authorship disputes, are carefully evaluated by the Editorial Board.
When questions regarding authorship arise, the corresponding author is first contacted and, if necessary, all co-authors are consulted. In the event of an impasse, the affiliated institution(s) or funding agency(ies) involved in the research may be contacted to support the resolution.

Retraction

Published articles in which misconduct is identified remain indexed in the SciELO database as retracted. The retraction clearly documents its reason, duly referenced, through communication from the author(s) or the Editor. Retraction may be partial when the misconduct applies only to a specific part of the article, without compromising the entire work. Retractions are published as soon as possible after verification.

Errata

Errors or failures, regardless of nature or origin, that do not constitute misconduct are corrected through an erratum. After publication, any errors identified by authors or readers and communicated to the Editorial Team will be verified and corrected via an erratum in the next issue.

Addenda

When necessary, additional clarifications, updates, or complementary information to an already published article may be issued through an addendum linked to the original article.

Authors and readers are encouraged to consult the following SciELO guides to better understand the journal’s ethical policies and procedures:

Policy on Conflict of Interest

Conflicts of interest may be of a personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial nature. They may occur when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that could influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts.

The author(s) must declare in the manuscript whether there is any conflict of interest, financial or otherwise, that may have influenced the preparation or execution of the study. In addition, the corresponding author must submit a specific statement, signed by all authors, and upload it to the article submission platform.

Editors and reviewers designated to evaluate a manuscript are also required to declare that they have no conflicts of interest, financial, personal (including family relationships up to the third degree), or of any other kind, that could influence the evaluation of the article.

For more information, see: Disclosure of Financial and Non-Financial Relationships and Activities, and Conflicts of Interest.

Adoption of similarity software

Revista Brasileira de Entomologia adopts the iThenticate system for similarity identification. Practices that violate scientific integrity, such as plagiarism, self-plagiarism, fabrication of data, redundant publication and undisclosed conflicts of interest, can be identified during the review process or even after publication. Manuscripts undergo similarity checking after the first peer review.

Adoption of software using Artificial Intelligence resources

RBE does not use artificial intelligence (AI) software or resources in its editorial processes.

Authors may not use AI tools, including chatbots and generative AI applications (e.g., ChatGPT, Bard), to generate or substantively modify the content of manuscripts submitted to the journal. However, the responsible use of AI-assisted technologies (such as language editing or grammar correction tools) is permitted, provided that such use is clearly declared in the manuscript (e.g., in the Methods or Acknowledgments section).

AI tools cannot replace human authorship. Concealing the use of AI resources constitutes an ethical lapse that violates transparency and honesty in research communication.

For more information, see the Guide to the Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools and Resources in Research Communication on the SciELO Network

Gender and Sex Issues

The Revista Brasileira de Entomologia editorial team, as well as the authors who publish in the journal, must always observe the Sex and Gender Equity in Research – SAGER guidelines. The SAGER guidelines provide a set of recommendations that guide the reporting of sex and gender information in study design, data analysis, and the results and interpretation of findings. In addition, the Revista Brasileira de Entomologia is committed to observing a gender equity policy in the composition and training of its Editorial Board.

Ethics Committee

Authors must include an Ethics Committee approval statement when applicable, indicating the institution and protocol number.

Instructions to authors

Types of Documents Accepted

The Revista Brasileira de Entomologia (RBE) publishes high-quality scientific contributions in all areas of entomology. The journal accepts the following types of manuscripts:

  • Original Articles – Full research papers presenting unpublished and original scientific data.
  • Review Articles – Critical and systematic reviews that provide comprehensive analyses of topics relevant to entomology.
  • Short Communications – Concise reports of original research. These manuscripts must follow the same scientific standards as full articles and include an abstract and keywords. Anecdotal notes or simple records of species without broader ecological or taxonomic context will not be considered. A maximum of three figures and/or tables is allowed.
  • Taxonomic Papers – Manuscripts describing new taxa (species, genera, or families). All nomenclatural acts must comply with the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN). Authors are required to register such acts in ZooBank, and the registration number (urn:lsid) must be included in the manuscript.

The Revista Brasileira de Entomologia (RBE) accepts submissions only in English, which is also the publication language of the journal. Both American and British English are acceptable, but consistency must be maintained throughout the manuscript. Authors are encouraged to ensure that their manuscripts are written in clear and correct scientific English; professional language editing services may be used if necessary.

The Revista Brasileira de Entomologia (RBE) accepts the submission of manuscripts that have previously been deposited in recognized preprint servers. The Journal recommends, preferably, the SciELO Preprints server. The existence of a preprint does not affect the editorial evaluation, peer review, or publication decision.

Authors' Contribution

The Revista Brasileira de Entomologia (RBE) requires that each author declare their individual contributions to the article. All authors must have materially participated in the research and/or in the preparation of the manuscript, and the statement that all authors have approved the final version must be true and included in the disclosure.

RBE adopts the CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy) to standardize the description of author contributions. Authors should indicate specific roles, such as: Conceptualization, Methodology, Investigation, Data curation, Writing – original draft, Writing – review & editing, Supervision, Funding acquisition, among others. These contributions will be published in the final article.

Changes to authorship – Authors are expected to carefully consider the list and order of authors before submission and provide the definitive list of authors at the time of the original submission. Any addition, deletion, or rearrangement of author names should only occur before acceptance and requires approval by the Editor, with written confirmation from all authors (including the one being added or removed). Only in exceptional circumstances will such changes be considered after acceptance. If approved after online publication, a corrigendum will be issued.

Manuscript Preparation

Manuscripts submitted to the Revista Brasileira de Entomologia (RBE) must present research clearly, rigorously, and in a way that demonstrates the originality and relevance of the work to the field of entomology. Authors should prepare their manuscripts following the structure and style of scientific writing commonly adopted in international journals.

  • Material and Methods – Sufficient detail for reproducibility; cite standard methods, describe modifications.
  • Results – Clear and concise presentation of findings.
  • Discussion – Interpretation of results; combined Results and Discussion acceptable; avoid repetition.
  • Conclusions – Main findings, either in a separate section or within the Discussion.
  • Acknowledgements – Individuals or institutions that contributed but are not authors.
  • Funding and Declarations of Interest – Funding sources with grant numbers; if none, state explicitly. Conflicts of interest must be declared.
  • References – Follow Elsevier Harvard style; ensure consistency between text and reference list.
  • Tables and Figures – Submit as editable text (tables) and separate high-resolution files (figures). Provide captions and notes separately.
  • Supplementary Material – Datasets, images, videos, or other files may be submitted; they are published as received with concise captions.

Essential Title Page Information

  • Title – Concise and informative. Avoid abbreviations and formulas.
  • Author names and affiliations – Clearly indicate given and family names. Affiliations should include full institutional addresses (department, institution, city, country), listed in hierarchical order and in the institution’s original language. Use superscript letters to link authors to affiliations. Provide the email of each author, when available.
  • ORCID ID – Required for all authors. Registration can be completed at https://orcid.org/register.
  • Corresponding author – Clearly identify the author responsible for correspondence during submission, peer review, and publication, with current email address.
  • Present/permanent address – If applicable, indicate as a footnote, while retaining the original affiliation where the work was conducted.

Abstract and Keywords

  • Abstract – Maximum of 250 words, clear and factual, summarizing objectives, methods, principal results, and major conclusions. Must be able to stand alone. References should generally be avoided; if essential, cite author(s) and year(s). Non-standard abbreviations must be defined at first mention.
  • Keywords – Provide up to 5 keywords in alphabetical order. Do not use words already appearing in the title or abstract.

Abbreviations

Define non-standard abbreviations in a footnote on the first page. Abbreviations used in the abstract must be defined at first mention. Ensure consistency throughout the manuscript.

Acknowledgements

List acknowledgements at the end of the article, before the references. Include individuals who provided assistance (e.g., language revision, technical support). Do not include acknowledgements on the title page.

Funding

Funding sources must be declared as follows:
Funding: This work was supported by [Funding Agency] [grant number xxxx].

Footnotes

Use footnotes sparingly, numbered consecutively. Word processors that manage automatic footnotes are acceptable. Footnotes must not appear in the reference list.

Digital Assets

All digital assets, including tables, figures, illustrations, diagrams, maps, photographs, videos, and supplementary files, must be prepared carefully to ensure high-quality reproduction in both print and electronic formats.

General Principles

  • All assets must be original, clear, and of high resolution.
  • Avoid unnecessary duplication between figures, tables, and text.
  • Captions must fully describe the asset, explain symbols or abbreviations, and disclose any image adjustments.

Image Manipulation

  • No feature of an image may be enhanced, obscured, moved, removed, or introduced.
  • Acceptable modifications: adjustments of brightness, contrast, or color balance, provided they do not obscure or eliminate information.
  • Nonlinear adjustments (e.g., gamma corrections) must be disclosed in the figure legend.

Figures and Illustrations

  • Uniformity: Use consistent lettering and sizing.
  • Fonts: Arial, Courier, Times New Roman, or Symbol (or similar).
  • Numbering: Figures must be numbered consecutively according to their order in the text.
  • Compound figures: Use letters for components (e.g., Figure 1a, 1b).
  • Captions: Provide separately, not embedded in the image.
  • Dimensions: Size figures close to their final publication dimensions.
  • Submission: Each figure must be submitted as a separate file.

File Formats and Resolution

  • Define symbols, abbreviations, and describe any modifications to images.

Video and Multimedia

  • RBE accepts links to video or animation sequences to enhance and support scientific results.
  • Authors are encouraged to supply video or animation files with their manuscript.
  • Indicate in the text where the video/animation should be placed.
  • Provide text suitable for both online and print versions (since video cannot be embedded in print).

Supplementary Material

  • Supplementary files (e.g., datasets, spreadsheets, images, sound clips, presentations) may be published online to enhance the article.
  • Submit supplementary files together with the main manuscript.
  • Provide concise, descriptive captions for all supplementary files.
  • Supplementary material will be published exactly as submitted; please ensure correctness before uploading.
  • Avoid using “Track Changes” or annotations in the supplementary files.

Citations and References

The Revista Brasileira de Entomologia (RBE) follows the Elsevier Harvard reference style for in-text citations and reference lists. Authors must ensure that every reference cited in the text appears in the reference list and vice versa.

In-text citations

  • Single author: Author’s surname and year of publication.
    • Example: (Allan, 2000)
  • Two authors: Both authors’ surnames and year.
    • Example: (Allan and Jones, 1999)
  • Three or more authors: First author’s surname followed by et al. and year.
    • Example: (Kramer et al., 2010)
  • Multiple references: Cite chronologically or alphabetically, but consistently.
    • Example: (Allan, 2000a, 2000b; Allan and Jones, 1999; Jones, 1999)

References cited in the abstract must be given in full. Unpublished results and personal communications are not recommended but may be mentioned in the text. If included in the reference list, they should be clearly identified as “Unpublished results” or “Personal communication.” References cited as “in press” imply formal acceptance for publication.

Reference list

References should be arranged alphabetically by author surname, and then chronologically. Multiple items by the same author in the same year must be distinguished with letters (a, b, c).

ZooBank Registration

Since January 2020, the Revista Brasileira de Entomologia has discontinued the publications of its issues in the print form, which means that we are an exclusively online journal. In this sense, considering that a great number of papers published by RBE contain taxonomic nomenclatural acts (e.g. descriptions of new taxa), these papers must agree with the Amendment of Article 8 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (Bulletin of Zoological Nomenclature 2012 69, 161–169), which requires that:

Article 8.5. To be considered published, a work issued and distributed electronically must be registered in the Official Register of Zoological Nomenclature (ZooBank) and contain evidence in the work itself that such registration has occurred.

Accordingly, the Revista Brasileira de Entomologia requires that any manuscript dealing with the description of new species, genera or families, submitted to the journal, must be registered in ZooBank and the name of each new taxonomic name (e.g. new family, genus or species) should be added to ZooBank.

Authors should do this by creating an account in ZooBank (http://zoobank.org/). Once that is done the manuscript and name are registered as follows:

  1. Click on ‘Register content’ in ZooBank. You will first be asked to register the publication in which a new name is being established.
  2. Authors may initially register information for a publication whose status is recorded as ‘not yet published’, and then revise this to ‘published’ once the manuscript appears electronically.
  3. Note that the Amendment of Article 8 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature requires that the entry in ZooBank must give the name and Internet address of an organization other than the publisher that is intended to permanently archive the work in a manner that preserves the content and layout. In the case of the Revista Brasileira de Entomologia, either CLOCKSS or Portico should be selected from the drop‐down menu of online archives. The Amendment to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature also states that the entry in ZooBank must give an ISBN for the work or an ISSN for the journal containing it. The online and print ISSN in the case of the Revista Brasileira de Entomologia are filled automatically in the web form field (0085-5626). Note that failure to complete all information listed above will mean the taxon name does not meet the requirements of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature for electronic publications; hence, publication of the manuscript on the journal's website, prior to print publication, will not represent a valid use of the taxon name.
  4. Once the publication is registered, you can register new nomenclatural acts for new taxa. For species, you will need to include the genus name and the species name in the separate form fields. You can repeat this process, adding multiple taxa in the same publication.
  5. Once the publication and names have been registered, you can search for any of the new names in ZooBank. This brings up a webpage with the new name and the ZooBank identification number for that species, a ‘urn’ number that appears as:
urn:lsid:zoobank.org:act:XXXXXXXX‐XXXXX‐XXX‐XXXX‐XXXXXXXXXXXX (a series of numbers and letters).
Note the identification numbers for names include ‘act’ in the sequence number.
  6. If you click on the authors listed in the ‘Publication’ line of the new record you have created, this will link to the publication and give you a ZooBank identification number for that publication, a ‘urn’ register number that appears as:
urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:XXXXXXXX‐XXXX‐XXXX‐XXXX‐XXXXXXXXXXXX (a series of numbers and letters).
Note the identification numbers for publications include ‘pub’ in the sequence number.
The ZooBank identification number for the manuscript must be included in your manuscript on the title page of your manuscript submitted to the Revista Brasileira de Entomologia, following the author names and affiliations for your manuscript. This procedure must be done at the revision of the article proof by authors prior to publication.
The ZooBank identification number for each new species should appear at the start of the definition of the new taxon, as below:
    Aus bus, new species
    urn:lsid:zoobank.org:act:XXXXXXXX‐XXXXX‐XXX‐XXXX‐XXXXXXXXXXXX

Figure 1; Tables I & II

(While the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature does not require the species register numbers to be included in the electronic publication, the Revista Brasileira de Entomologia requests this information, to conform with protocols of several other taxonomic journals.).

Once your manuscript has been published electronically, please ensure to update the status of your ZooBank record for the manuscript from ‘not yet published’ to ‘published.’ This will then ensure the name is publicly searchable in the ZooBank database.

ZooBank has tutorial videos on all steps of the process (creating an account; registering a publication; then registering the new names in that publication): http://zoobank.org/VideoGuide/

Important: The registration of articles and nomenclatural acts is of total responsibility of authors. RBE will not claim responsibility for any invalid taxon.

Author Responsibilities

Voucher Policy

The Revista Brasileira de Entomologia encourages authors to deposit voucher and type specimens in public museums or permanent university collections. Authors should clearly indicate in the manuscript where specimens will be deposited. Proper labeling and indication of vouchers are the sole responsibility of the authors.

Authors’ Responsibility

Authors are fully responsible for the scientific content of their manuscripts, the accuracy of grammar and style, and for returning page proofs within the indicated deadline. Authors are encouraged to consult recent issues of the RBE to follow format and layout conventions.

Proofs

Page proofs will be sent as PDF files to the corresponding author. Proofs must be checked carefully for typesetting, editing, and completeness of text, tables, and figures. Only minor corrections are allowed at this stage; significant changes require Editor approval. All corrections must be returned in a single communication. The accuracy of proofreading is solely the responsibility of the authors.
