ABOUT THE JOURNAL

Brief Background

Serviço Social & Sociedade is the first nationwide journal in the field of Social Work, remaining one of the most important publications and a mandatory reference for professors, university students, researchers, and professionals who seek to engage in the debate on major national and international issues that affect Social Work, the Humanities, Social Sciences, Applied Social Sciences, and related areas.

The journal Serviço Social & Sociedade released its first issue in 1979 and has been published uninterruptedly ever since. In 2010 (issue 101), it became part of the SciELO collection, with its first online edition.

Starting from issue 125 (2016), the journal Serviço Social & Sociedade adopted the principles of Open Science and began publishing articles in XML format, following the set of elements and markup rules established by the SciELO Publishing Schema. This initiative expanded access to the journal’s content, allowing it to be viewed on different platforms, browsers, and devices, thus increasing its visibility and promoting accessibility and the democratization of knowledge.

The journal also adopted the open access policy distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons license (CC-BY) and, since 2023, has been published on a continuous basis.

Objectives: To provide visibility to the academic and professional production of social workers and researchers in related areas, as well as to contribute to debate and critical analysis, preferably focusing on issues related to Brazilian and Latin American realities, thus democratizing access to knowledge.

Areas of interest: Social Sciences, Applied Social Sciences, Humanities, Social Work, Ethics, Political Science, Social Policies, and Public Policies.

Open Access

This journal operates under the Open Access model, providing unrestricted online access (including free of charge) to all scientific articles it publishes.

Open access is the condition in which the copyright holder of an academic work grants usage rights to third parties through an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY), allowing immediate free access to the work and authorizing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose.

Compliance with open science

The Open Science movement establishes guidelines aimed at promoting a more collaborative, accessible, and transparent scientific practice. In line with these principles, the journal Serviço Social & Sociedade adopts several measures, including: an open access policy; adherence to a code of good editorial practices; ethical principles; the use of social media to disseminate published work; and clear identification of each author’s role in multi-author articles, following the CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy).

The journal also encourages the sharing and availability of materials that support the research and its findings, such as databases used in analyses, data collection instruments, computer program codes employed in statistical analyses, and other supplementary materials.

Authors whose manuscripts are accepted must complete an Open Science Compliance Declaration form, ensuring transparency of this information: Declaração de Conformidade com a Ciência Aberta.

Ethics and good publication practices

The journal Serviço Social & Sociedade upholds strict ethical principles and good editorial practices at all stages of the publication process. The journal is guided by a commitment to confidentiality by the editorial board and the editorial committees involved in manuscript evaluation, respecting the ethical and political foundations of professional Social Work practice. This commitment is reflected in adherence to the Professional Code of Ethics for Social Workers, ensuring that the topics addressed in articles reflect the principles of democracy, pluralism, critical thinking, respect for differences, and the rejection of all forms of discrimination and prejudice.

Manuscript evaluations follow a double-blind peer review system, conducted by expert reviewers with recognized knowledge in the relevant thematic areas.

Editorial committees hold regular meetings to share information, make collective decisions, evaluate articles and reviews, and distribute responsibilities, thereby strengthening transparency and ethics in the editorial process.

At the time of submission, authors must declare that their research fully complies with the ethical principles governing scientific integrity and disclose any sources of funding. For articles based on research, prior approval from the ethics committees of the authors’ affiliated institutions is required. Responsibility for adherence to ethical standards in research rests solely with the authors.

Serviço Social & Sociedade adopts as a reference the international principles and guidelines for good editorial practices, relying on the following documents and organizations: Guide to Good Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication by SciELO; Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE); and the guidelines of the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).

EDITORIAL POLICY

Preprints

Serviço Social & Sociedade accepts the submission of manuscripts that have already been deposited on preprint platforms. In such cases, authors must complete a form indicating this condition and provide the name of the repository and the access link to the preprint.

In line with the principles of Open Science, Serviço Social & Sociedade offers authors and reviewers the option of opening the peer review process, with or without identity disclosure. Authorization for name disclosure may or may not be granted by the authors after the manuscript has been approved for publication and, subsequently, through the signing of the Open Science Compliance Form; reviewers may also authorize or decline the disclosure of their names in the evaluation form. These forms are already integrated into the journal’s OJS system through the ReviewerCredits platform.

For the names of authors and reviewers to be published along with the approved article, all of the article’s authors, as well as all reviewers who evaluated the manuscript, must grant their permission.

Peer Review Process

Serviço Social & Sociedade adopts peer review as the central stage of its editorial process, ensuring scientific quality, coherence with its ethical-political stance, and commitment to academic rigor. Submitted manuscripts are reviewed by ad hoc referees with recognized expertise in the article’s subject matter, under a double-blind review system, which guarantees impartiality and integrity in the evaluation process.

Manuscript evaluation considers several dimensions, such as the methodological adequacy of the research, compliance with ethical standards governing scientific production—particularly those related to Social Work and Applied Social Sciences—and compatibility with the principles of Open Science. Other aspects include compliance with editorial and formatting guidelines, originality of the proposal, relevance and timeliness of the topic, clarity in the definition of the object of study, theoretical and methodological consistency, analytical rigor, argumentative and textual quality, as well as the alignment of the content with the journal’s focus and scope.

To submit a manuscript, each author must register in the Submission system and submit their work for review and, subsequently, for evaluation by the Editorial Committee. Authors can also track the review process through their login and password. Access to the submission system is available at: http://submission.scielo.br/index.php/sssoc/login.

Manuscripts, submitted exclusively through the SciELO platform, first undergo a screening process by the editor-in-chief, who verifies their alignment with the journal’s editorial line and thematic scope. At this preliminary stage, formal aspects are also assessed, such as compliance with character limits, the inclusion of required elements (title, abstract, and keywords in two languages), the absence of authorship identification in the manuscript body, and the correct formatting of references at the end of the manuscript.

Once approved at this initial stage, the article is forwarded to the peer review process, using the double-blind system, in which the editor-in-chief and the editorial advisors in the field of social work designate at least two ad hoc referees specialized in the subject matter. In addition to ad hoc reviewers, manuscripts may also be forwarded to one or more members of the Editorial Board for evaluation. After the reviews are issued, both the manuscripts and the reviews are submitted to the Editorial Committee previously designated for that specific journal issue. At this point, the committee analyzes the reviews and manuscripts without access to the authors’ identities, deliberating on approval, rejection, or the need for specific revisions to the manuscript. The review period usually ranges from 45 to 90 days.

It is the responsibility of the Editorial Committee, together with the editorial advisors in the field of Social Work, to make the final decision regarding the acceptance or rejection of a manuscript, based on the reviewers’ evaluations and its own reading and assessment of the texts. In cases where revisions are requested, the manuscript will be returned to the authors for revision and subsequently re-evaluated by the Editorial Committee for a final decision.

Open peer review

In accordance with the Open Science guidelines promoted by SciELO, Serviço Social & Sociedade adopts practices aimed at increasing transparency, collaboration, and dialogue in the editorial process, while maintaining the double-blind peer review policy as the standard.

The journal implements the following actions:

The published article includes the name of the editor-in-chief responsible for the editorial process.

Reviewers are offered the possibility to communicate directly with the corresponding author, with the option to disclose identities or not. This interaction is voluntary and occurs only with mutual consent.

The journal also offers the possibility of publishing the approval reviews of articles, with or without identifying the reviewers, provided that there is agreement among all parties involved.

These practices are voluntary and depend on the consent of all participants. If authors choose any form of process openness, they must complete the Open Science Compliance Form, available at: https://wp.scielo.org/wp-content/uploads/Formulario-de-Conformidade-Ciencia-Aberta.docx

It is emphasized that, although openness is encouraged, the editorial policy of Serviço Social & Sociedade remains based on double-blind peer review as the standard, ensuring confidentiality between authors and reviewers throughout the evaluation process.

Open Data

With the aim of promoting Open Science practices and ensuring transparency in knowledge production, authors are encouraged to make the contents (data, codes, methods, and other materials) used in their research available on SciELO Dataverse. In this regard, approved articles resulting from original research must include a “Data Availability” statement, indicating whether the data are publicly available and how they can be accessed.

If authors choose to make their data available, they should be deposited in an open repository: SciELO Data (Dataverse of Serviço Social & Sociedade): https://data.scielo.org/dataverse/brsssoc

The repository storing the data and information used, when applicable, must be cited in the text according to the Research Data Citation Guide. This citation should preferably appear in the methodology section and must also be included in both the reference list and the “Research Data Availability” section.

Fees

Serviço Social & Sociedade is an open-access and free journal. To maintain this model, ensuring democratized access to knowledge for all and the financial sustainability of the publication process, starting from issue 141, authors whose articles have been reviewed and approved for publication are required to contribute an amount of BRL 550.00 (five hundred and fifty reais), updated in 2025. This fee is adjusted annually and is intended to cover editorial costs such as: text preparation and formatting, language and textual revision, compliance with ABNT standards, layout (including two proofs), XML conversion, and general publishing tasks.

If the article has already been formatted, is in the second proof, ready for publication, and the author wishes to make substantial changes to the content — including additions, deletions, or significant modifications — an additional fee of BRL 10.00 per page will be charged. For example, if the article has 20 formatted pages, the fee will be BRL 10.00 × 20, totaling BRL 200.00. These changes affect the overall text and the finalization of the article as a whole; therefore, the fee is applied to the entire article, not just the altered page.

The fee is only requested from authors with articles approved for publication. There is no cost for submitting manuscripts.
After article approval, it may also be considered for publication in a foreign language (English or Spanish), further increasing the visibility of the work. If the author accepts this option, it will incur additional costs as follows: BRL 25.00 per translated page (each page corresponds to 1,600 characters including spaces) and BRL 7.00 per formatted page. These costs must be paid by the author if they agree to have their text translated.

The fee will not be charged in cases where the article has been commissioned by the Editorial Board and the Social Work Editorial Advisory team.

Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy

The Serviço Social & Sociedade adopts a strict policy of ethics and good practices in scientific publishing, aiming to preserve its reputation and the integrity of research.

Regarding authorship, all individuals who have made a significant contribution to the conception, development, or data analysis of the work must be identified as authors. This identification is formalized through the completion of a form containing each author’s information. In the case of a conflict of interest, it must be explicitly declared in the publication.

If there is any doubt regarding the authorship of a manuscript, the editor-in-chief will contact the corresponding author. Should uncertainties persist, the other co-authors may also be contacted. When necessary, the process may extend to the institutions to which the authors are affiliated or that funded the research, in order to clarify the matter in a transparent and responsible manner.

Authors must also declare that they have adhered to all relevant ethical guidelines in their research, including scientific integrity and respect for the subjects involved, as well as disclose funding sources, when applicable. For research involving human participants, submission of supporting documentation is mandatory, such as approval from the Research Ethics Committee, formal authorizations from participants, clinical trial registrations, or equivalent documents, in accordance with current legislation. In cases of missing or unclear information, the editor-in-chief will contact the corresponding author and, if necessary, all co-authors to request additional data to ensure the ethical integrity of the editorial process.

All submitted articles are evaluated without discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, nationality, religious belief, or political position of the authors.

Significant errors identified after publication must be immediately reported to the editor for correction through the publication of an erratum.

Regarding scientific misconduct — including plagiarism, self-plagiarism, data falsification or manipulation, and duplicate publication — the journal uses similarity detection tools and follows a policy of retraction or public correction when necessary. Such situations may result in editorial sanctions, including rejection of new submissions from the authors involved or formal retraction of already published articles.

Serviço Social & Sociedade follows the ethical principles and good practice recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the SciELO Guide to Good Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publishing.

Policy on Conflict of Interest

Conflicts of interest may arise when authors, reviewers, or editors hold interests that could influence the preparation, review, or evaluation of manuscripts. Such conflicts may be personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial in nature. Upon submission, authors are responsible for recognizing and disclosing any financial or other conflicts that may have influenced their work. Where a conflict of interest exists, the author must disclose it in a signed statement, to be uploaded as a supplementary document on the submission platform.

Adoption of Similarity Software

In line with its commitment to originality and academic integrity, Serviço Social & Sociedade employs similarity-checking software, such as ZeroGPT, to support the detection of plagiarism and to safeguard the quality of its published articles.
All manuscripts that receive favorable peer reviews and are subsequently approved by the Editorial Committee and the Editorial Advisory Board in the field of Social Work are subject to similarity verification.

Manuscripts that receive favorable evaluations from reviewers and are also approved by the Editorial Committee and the Editorial Advisory Board in the field of Social Work are subjected to similarity checking.

If a significant level of overlap with previously published material is identified, the authors will be contacted to make the necessary revisions. Should such revisions prove insufficient or the issue remain unresolved, the manuscript may be rejected. In such cases, the article will not advance to the production stages, which include editing, preparation, typesetting, and publication.

Policy on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools

The Serviço Social & Sociedade does not recommend the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the drafting of manuscripts. However, if authors decide to employ AI technologies, and in order to uphold the integrity, transparency, and quality of published research, the Journal establishes the following guidelines for the responsible use of AI in submitted manuscripts:

Authorship: AI-based tools do not meet the criteria for authorship and must not, under any circumstances, be listed as co-authors.

Responsibility: Authors bear full responsibility for supervising the use of AI throughout the research and writing process. They assume complete accountability for any errors, plagiarism, or other forms of misconduct arising from the use of such technologies. Authorship entails full responsibility for the published content.

Originality and authenticity: Where AI is employed for content generation, authors must ensure that the resulting material is original, accurate, and makes a meaningful contribution to the field of study.

Declaration of use: Manuscripts that involve the use of AI at any stage — including drafting, analysis, review, or any other application — must include a clear and explicit disclosure of such use in the Materials and Methods section, specifying the extent and purpose of the technology employed.

Transparency: Authors must provide detailed information about the AI tools used, including name, version, model, source, applied parameters, and the role the tool played in the development of the manuscript.

Discussion of limitations: Where AI has been employed as a research instrument, authors must discuss its limitations and any potential biases resulting from its use.

For further details, please consult the SciELO Guide to AI Tools and Resources.

Authors must also complete the AI Use Declaration Form and submit it as a supplementary document during the submission process.

Gender and Sex Issues

The editorial team of Serviço Social & Sociedade and its authors must follow the Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER) Guidelines. These guidelines provide direction for the inclusion and appropriate reporting of sex and gender aspects in research design, data analysis, and in the presentation and interpretation of results. Furthermore, Serviço Social & Sociedade upholds a policy of gender equity in the composition of its editorial board.

Race and ethnicity issues

The Serviço Social & Sociedade is committed to race and ethnicity equity in the composition of its editorial board. In addition, the Journal promotes themes for the ethnic-racial debate, contributing to the advancement of an anti-racist society.

Ethics Committee

For manuscripts resulting from research involving human subjects or sensitive data, prior approval by the Ethics Committee of the authors’ affiliated institutions, or a similar body, is required. Such approval must be evidenced by a formal statement issued by the institution responsible for authorizing the research.

Guidelines for manuscript submission and presentation

The Serviço Social & Sociedade is a journal that publishes articles primarily in Portuguese and Spanish. The publication of translations of articles originally written in Portuguese into Spanish, and in some cases into English, is also encouraged.
The text selected for translation will be forwarded by the Publisher, with the author’s consent, for translation, versioning, review, layout, and XML conversion processes. The author is responsible for covering the associated costs.

Articles outside the scope of the journal—i.e., topics not related to Social Work, Human Sciences, Social Sciences, Applied Social Sciences, and related fields—will not be accepted. Additionally, manuscripts previously published in national or international journals, in print or digital format, will not be accepted, except for original articles previously made available on preprint servers.

Articles that violate professional ethics, contain prejudiced terms or ideas, or express viewpoints inconsistent with the editorial policy of Serviço Social & Sociedade and Cortez Editora will not be published.

The publication of manuscripts in Serviço Social & Sociedade, after final approval, requires the author to pay a fee to cover editorial production costs, ensuring the sustainability of the journal in open access. For more information, see the section: Fees.
The concepts and information contained in articles published in Serviço Social & Sociedade are the sole responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Journal’s Editorial Board or Cortez Editora.
All manuscripts are fully available in electronic format on the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) website. Since issue no. 101, published in 2010, the journal has been available exclusively in electronic format. Prior to this issue, it was also published in print.

All published articles are assigned a DOI (Digital Object Identifier), ensuring permanent identification and online accessibility.
The journal has an open structure, allowing for the publication of thematic and free-topic articles, translated articles, editorials, interviews, book reviews, and experience reports.

Book Review: A presentation and critique of a book from the perspective of the reader, guiding the reader regarding its characteristics, with opinions providing an overall view of the work. A book review is not a summary of the book. Unlike an article, it does not require a resumo or palavras-chave. However, references according to ABNT standards must be included at the end of the text. Book reviews must not exceed 20,000 characters, including spaces, from the title to the last reference.

See submission requirements: https://submission.scielo.br/index.php/sssoc/about/submissions

Translation: After approval of the article for publication in its original language (Portuguese), the Editorial Committee or the authors themselves may suggest its publication in another language, preferably Spanish or English, with the aim of increasing the international reach of the article. If the authors agree to the translation, they must cover the corresponding costs. The Publisher is responsible for coordinating the entire translation and revision process, ensuring the quality of the final text.

Authors' Contribution

After manuscript approval, the author must specify the individual contributions of each author to the conception, development, or analysis of the work. This identification is formalized during the completion of the author information form. To do so, a taxonomy structure inspired by the CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy) model is adopted, including the following categories:

A. Conceptualization or theoretical foundation
B. Methodology
C. Data analysis and interpretation
D. Drafting the initial manuscript
E. Critical review
F. Rewriting and editing
G. Supervision or project administration
H. Other (when applicable, specify)

Manuscript Preparation

Since January 2016, Serviço Social & Sociedade operates exclusively through the SciELO Publication System, which uses the Open Journal System as a platform for electronic management and publication of scientific journals. Therefore, the entire process of article submission and peer review is conducted through this electronic platform. Each author must register in the Submission system and submit their work for the consideration of the Editorial Committee, and may also track the evaluation process of their manuscript using their login credentials. Access to the registration system is available at: http://submission.scielo.br/index.php/sssoc/login

After registering with a login and password, the author is able to submit their article, which will first be evaluated by the Editor-in-Chief regarding formal aspects, such as formatting, text length, and others. Subsequently, the manuscript will be forwarded for review by the peer reviewers and the Editorial Board.

Evaluation process

Manuscripts received exclusively through the SciELO platform are submitted to a double-blind peer review process, conducted by specialized ad hoc reviewers. In this process, reviewers do not have access to the authors’ identities, and likewise, authors do not know the identities of the reviewers.

Reviewers, through a report completed in the journal’s specific form, will recommend one of three options:

  • Approval of the manuscript without suggesting changes;
  • Approval of the manuscript provided that the authors follow the reviewers’ suggestions;
  • Non-approval of the manuscript.

The reviews, together with the submitted manuscript, are forwarded to the Editorial Committee assigned for each specific issue of the journal and to the Social Work Area Editorial Advisory. It is their responsibility to evaluate both the reviews and the manuscript, thereby determining whether the text will be approved for publication.

Article Submission Format

1) The article must include a title (concise and informative, with a maximum of 100 characters including spaces). The title should use sentence case, i.e., the first letter capitalized and the remaining letters in lowercase, without a period at the end.

2) All published articles must include the title, abstract, and keywords in English to ensure greater visibility.

3) Abstracts should be clear, intelligible, and provide an excellent summary of the article, with a maximum of 500 characters including spaces. The article must also include an abstract in English (abstract) or Spanish (resumen).

4) The article must also include 3 to 6 keywords in the primary language of the text and in a second language. Keywords should be separated by semicolons, with the initial letter capitalized. Example: Serviço Social; Trabalho; Formação Social

5) Authors’ names, when containing compound surnames, should be presented clearly (using uppercase, bold, and/or hyphen to ensure correct identification). To preserve the double-blind review process, authors’ names must not appear in the manuscript body. However, a separate file (in Word format) must include the full name, ORCID, qualification, institutional affiliation (full name), city and state, and contact e-mail.

6)If the article received funding, all sources of support must be disclosed, including the names of sponsoring institutions or entities and the corresponding project or contract number.

7) Submission files must be in Word format and not in PDF.

8) The text must be in 1.5 line spacing, using 12-point Arial or Times New Roman font.

9) The total text must not exceed 40,000 characters including spaces, counting from the title to the last reference.

10) The text must not have more than 3 authors.

11) References must be listed at the end of the article in alphabetical order, containing only works cited in the text, not all works consulted, and must follow the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT).

Example: PINTO, R. M. F. Política educacional e Serviço Social. São Paulo: Cortez Editora, 1986.

In this format: surname in uppercase followed by initials (not full first name), title of the work in italics, place of publication followed by a colon, publisher’s name, comma, and year of publication.

12) For texts resulting from research with human subjects, approval by an Ethics Committee or similar body must be obtained, with proof provided.

13) For approved texts, to promote Open Science practices and ensure transparency in knowledge production, authors are encouraged to make the data used in their research available on SciELO Dataverse.

14) Authors must acknowledge that, if the text is approved, they have 5 business days to pay the editorial production fee.

15) Authors must acknowledge that, upon initiating the revision process of the approved text, they have up to 2 business days to confirm receipt of the approval message.

16) Authors acknowledge that failure to comply with any of the above items will prevent the manuscript from proceeding to peer review.

Digital Assets

Images, figures, and photographs: All images must be inserted into the body of the text with high resolution (minimum 300 dpi) to ensure adequate reproduction quality. Images should be numbered sequentially, accompanied by a descriptive caption and the source indicated.

Tables and graphs: Tables and graphs must be presented clearly and legibly within the text, numbered sequentially, with a title and explanatory caption. Whenever applicable, the source of the data should be indicated. It is recommended to use formats compatible with text editing software, such as DOCX or XLSX for tables, and JPG, PNG, or TIFF for images.

Citations and References

Citations: Citations must follow the author-date system according to ABNT NBR 10520:2023.

  1. Author Presentation in the Author-Date System:

  1. Use of "et al.":
For works with four or more authors, it is permitted to use "et al." in the citation, even if all authors are listed in the reference. Example: (Silva et al., 2023).
  2. Punctuation:
The period should be placed after the citation, not before. Example: "The research revealed significant results" (Netto, 2013, p. 45).
  3. Citation of Citation (Apud):
The term "apud" should be used to indicate that the citation was taken from a source that cites another. Example: (Gomes apud Souza, 2020).
  4. Long Direct Citation:
For citations longer than three lines, use a 4 cm indentation from the left margin, without quotation marks, in a smaller font, and single-spaced.
  5. Indirect Citation:
When paraphrasing ideas from other authors, the source must be indicated, but page numbers are not required. Example: According to Souza (2018), education is fundamental for social development.
  6. Footnotes:
Footnotes should be used for clarifications or additional comments, not for bibliographic references.

References: References must comply with ABNT NBR 6023:2018.

Ordering of References: References should be organized alphabetically by the surname of the first author.

Author Citation: For works with up to three authors, all must be mentioned, separated by semicolons. For works with more than three authors, cite only the first author followed by "et al." (in italics).
