Abstract
Drawing on premises from Comparative Literature, Cultural Studies and Translation Studies, this paper seeks to understand the cultural relations that played a significant part in shaping Clarice Lispector’s linguistic, cultural and translational identity (Bildung), intending to establish a dialogue between the novel The Hour of the Star (2020), first published in 1977, and Clarice’s translation of The Picture of Dorian Gray [O Retrato de Dorian Gray (2016)], penned by Clarice in 1974. Starting from her relative closeness to the Jewish imaginary to her knowledge of English, French and Spanish, we can understand Clarice as a cultural translator. Among the various cultural connections, we can trace inside Clarice’s novel, the issues concerning the possibilities and the limits of literary and visual representation allows us to read Clarice’s novel tracing a comparison with Wilde’s novel.
