ABSTRACT
The focus is the action of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa with children. Using the epistemic figure of a model and historical sources, the evolution of reception, protection, and education actions included in the institution’s assistance-educational model is presented. It shows how this model was extended to the national level and affected the modern conception of childhood. An evolution of conceptions and institutions associated with childhood is traced. It concludes by focusing on the confluence between the model and policies for childhood, from the end of the 19th century to the Portuguese republic.
