About the journal

Brief History

The Cadernos Cedes constitute one of the Centro de Estudos Educação e Sociedade -CEDES (Center for Education and Society Studies) publications. They have been published since 1980 to disseminate knowledge produced and mobilize discussions on topics and research in Education.

Designed and aimed primarily at teachers and professionals in practice and training who work in different areas of activity and various levels and teaching modalities, Cadernos Cedes maintains the uninterrupted quarterly publication of three Thematic Issues per year, bringing together sets of texts focusing on specific subjects.

Over the years, following the transformations in the course of History and the movement towards the internationalization of research, policies and practices in Education, the Cadernos have expanded exchanges with teachers and researchers from different countries, especially Latin America and Europe, receiving proposals and encouraging the publication of experiences and studies nationally and internationally.

The journal accepts proposals for Thematic Issues composed of articles by authors from different regions of the country and abroad, which have previously been submitted for consideration by the Editorial Committee. Proposals must be sent to the following email address: revistas.cedes@linceu.com.br, under the Instructions to Authors.

Cadernos Cedes have been circulating since 2018, only online, when the printed format was discontinued.

Its abbreviated title is Cad. CEDES, a form that should be used in bibliographies, footnotes, references and bibliographic captions.

Open Science Compliance

Cadernos Cedes supports the Open Science policy, which advocates transparency in processes, reiterates ethics in research, adopts the preprint publication system, suggests openness in peer review and recommends sharing methods, data and computer programs. Participating in improving scientific communication practices following Open Science, Cadernos maintains open access, accepts preprint manuscripts, seeks transparent management and availability of research data, and has gradually opened the manuscript evaluation process.

When submitting an article in a Thematic Issue to the journal, the author must indicate whether it is deposited on a preprint server and provide its name and URL.

The articles that comprise a Thematic Issue must be unpublished, except those made available in preprint repositories. Simultaneous submission for evaluation to another journal is not permitted.

At the time of submission, the responsible author must complete and attach the Open Science Compliance Form, stating: (a) whether the manuscript is a preprint and, if so, its location; (b) whether data, program codes and other materials underlying the text of the manuscript are correctly cited and referenced; and, (c) open options are accepted in the peer review process.

Publication Ethics

  When submitting, the author must declare that all ethical guidelines regarding the integrity of scientific activities carried out during the research are respected and inform funding sources, such as research agencies. If applicable, the author must declare that the ethical principles were submitted and approved by the institution's ethics committee. Compliance with good ethical practices in research is the author's sole responsibility.

The Cadernos CEDES  are based on the principles of the SciELO Codes of Ethics, present in the “Guide to Good Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication” in the “Principles of Transparency and Good Practices in Academic Publications” recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE); on the principles of the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ); and the principles of Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA).

The CONEP—Comissão Nacional de Ética em Pesquisa (National Research Ethics Commission) document is a reference for virtual research. For researchers abroad, consult an equivalent document or contact the editorial secretary.

EDITORIAL POLICY

Preprints

The Cadernos CEDES accepts the publication of preprint articles, which, in addition to accelerating the communication of research results, allows the author to receive feedback on the work from readers and make any changes he deems pertinent.

The author can use a preprint, and it is assumed that when submitting the article to the journal through the Open Science Compliance Form, stating: (a) whether the manuscript is a preprint and, if so, its location; (b) whether data, program co, the name of the Preprint server and the DOI of the Preprint are informed.

Articles submitted to preprints share the originality of the publication with the journals, and the evaluation process will not use the double-blind procedure, as the authorship will become known.

Peer review process

A proposal for a Thematic Issue, containing: 1. Presentation justifying the relevance of the topic and arguments about the set of articles; 2. Extended summaries of the articles that make up the issue, with bibliography; and 3. A brief CV and institutional affiliation of the authors involved are first analyzed by the Editorial Committee, which evaluates its relevance, currentness, and possible contributions to the field and the public for which the Cadernos are intended.

Once the Editorial Committee approves, proponents and authors have 90 days to present the Complete Issue and insert the articles into the system. Two of its members, associate editors, monitor each proposal throughout the entire editorial production process.

Each proposed Thematic Issue, with complete texts, is sent for consideration by at least two reviewers from the Editorial Board or ad hoc experts who argue about the consistency of the proposal and the relevance of its acceptance. Each Issue is evaluated as a whole, taking into account its significance, originality and contribution to the field of education, just as each article that makes up an issue will be analyzed in its articulation and relevance to the set of texts, its theoretical-methodological consistency, analytical rigor, timeliness, quality of the text and suitability for the editorial scope.

Traditionally, Cadernos has adopted the double-blind system, in which the names of the reviewers remain confidential, with the names of the authors also being omitted from them. However, considering the Open Science policy, authors may open their names to evaluators. In turn, all ad hoc reviewers will have the option of being identified as the authors.

The organizers of the thematic issues will have the option of nominating names of possible ad hoc referees for consideration by the Committee. The Editorial Committee may publish reviews anonymously or credit reviewers who have authorized their identification.

During the evaluation process, for authors who opted for open evaluation, the Cadernos CEDES offers evaluators the option of communicating directly with the corresponding author, whether or not their identities are open.

Approved articles undergo a similarity assessment using the Similarity Check system. If a high degree of similarity to an already published text is detected, the article may be rejected, considering the originality requirement.

Cadernos CEDES publishes the names and ORCIDs of the two editors responsible for the evaluation process in the article's final version.

At the end of each year, the Nominata section will be published, along with the list of ad hoc reviewers who worked on evaluating the thematic issues.

Open data

Valuing the consolidation of Open Science processes, the author is requested to share all content (data, program codes and other materials) underlying the manuscript's text, previously or at the time of publication. Exceptions are allowed in cases of legal and ethical issues.

The objective is to facilitate the evaluation of the manuscript and, if approved, contribute to the preservation and reuse of data and information and the replicability of research.

For sharing, the author can use their institution's repository and identify relevant and certified repositories: List of repositories for depositing SciELO research data.

Alternatively, the author may state that the data will be made available upon direct request to the author or that all data are contained and discussed in the article.

If applicable, the repository where the data and information are located must be cited in the text in accordance with the Research Data Citation Guide, preferably in the methodological section, included in the list of references, and in the "Data Statement Availability" section.

Fee

Following the principles assumed by the Board and Editors of the Centro de Estudos Educação e Sociedade, Cadernos Cedes has not charged a fee for publishing articles since its founding. However, aiming for the financial sustainability of the editorial process, Cadernos CEDES requests that authors who have their articles approved join CEDES or collaborate in publishing the articles, presenting the following alternatives:

  •  Authors can choose to JOIN THE CEDES INSTITUTION. In this case, the value of the annual membership fee for each author, individually, in 2024 is R$350.00 (three hundred and fifty reais). For foreign authors, the cost is US$100.00 (one hundred dollars);
  • Authors can opt for EDITORIAL PRODUCTION COLLABORATION PER ARTICLE. For the year 2024, the cost is R$600.00 (six hundred reais)

Collaboration or association is requested only from authors whose articles have been approved for publication. Submitting articles is free.

Ethics and Misconduct, Errata and Retraction Policy

When submitting an article for publication in Cadernos CEDES, the author must declare that all ethical guidelines regarding the integrity of the scientific activities carried out during the research were respected and inform the funding sources, such as research agencies. If applicable, the author must declare that the ethical principles were submitted to and approved by the institution's ethics committee. Compliance with good ethical practices in research is the author's sole responsibility.

All articles will be evaluated, disregarding social markers of difference, such as gender, sexual orientation, race, religious belief, nationality, and the authors' political positions.

As for the authorship of the work, all authors who contributed to the conception, development and analysis of the data presented are identified as authors. Therefore, the author must identify and include all co-authors who effectively collaborated in writing the article. All authors must demonstrably accept responsibility for the article's content and register their respective contributions at the end of the manuscript in case of acceptance for publication.

If the author discovers any relevant error after publishing the article, he or she must immediately inform the editors so that the appropriate errata can be published.

Concerning the identification of misconduct, which includes plagiarism, self-plagiarism, republication of articles, and falsification of data, Cadernos CEDES uses the Similarity Check system. However, if the process of detecting misconduct fails and the article is published, the author becomes subject to editorial sanctions, such as retraction of plagiarized or already published scientific articles.

The Cadernos CEDES are based on: the principles of the SciELO Codes of Ethics, present in the “Guide to Good Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication”; in the “Principles of Transparency and Good Practices in Academic Publications” recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE); on the principles of Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ); and the principles of the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA).

The reference for virtual environment research is the  CONEP  – Comissão Nacional de Ética em Pesquisa (National Research Ethics Commission) document. For researchers abroad, consult an equivalent document or contact the editorial secretary.

Conflict of Interest Policy

Authors must declare the existence or absence of conflicts of interest, as the reliability of the peer review process and the credibility of published articles depend partly on how conflicts of interest are managed during writing, peer review, and editor decision-making. The conflict of interest may be of a personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial nature.

Conflicts of interest may arise when authors, evaluators or editors have interests that, apparent or not, may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts.

To best decide on a manuscript, one needs to know about any competing interests the authors may have. The goal is not to eliminate these interests; they are almost inevitable. Manuscripts will not be rejected simply because there is a conflict of interest.

If there are no conflicts of interest, transcribe and add the following note in the field indicated above: There were no conflicts of interest to carry out this study. Information about the author's conflicts of interest will be inserted at the end of the published article. If authors are still determining what may constitute a potential conflict of interest, they should contact the editorial secretariat of Cadernos CEDES.

In this way, it is expected:

Authors: When submitting a manuscript, authors are responsible for recognizing and disclosing financial or other conflicts that may have influenced their work. They must acknowledge all financial support for the work and other financial or personal connections related to the research.

Assessors: They must disclose to the editors any conflicts of interest that could influence their opinions of the manuscript, and they must declare themselves unqualified to review specific manuscripts if they believe that doing so is appropriate. As in the case of the authors, if there is silence on the part of the evaluators about potential conflicts, this may mean that such conflicts exist and have not been revealed or that the conflicts do not exist. Therefore, evaluators are also asked to provide statements of competing interests, which are used to assess the value of peer reports.

Editors: They must declare potential conflicts of interest in evaluating manuscripts and act to prevent conflicts of interest involving authors and evaluators from compromising ethical standards in publication.

Adoption of similarity-checking software

After peer review, approved articles are submitted to the Similarity Check system for similarity assessment. If a significant degree of similarity with an already published text is detected, the corresponding author will be contacted to make adjustments to the text, and the article may be rejected, considering the requirement for originality.

Sex and Gender Issues

Manuscripts submitted to Cadernos CEDES must comply with the principles of the Guideline on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER), which guide the reporting of information about sex and gender in study planning, data analysis and results, and interpretation of findings.

Per this guideline, the terms sex (biological attribute) and gender (shaped by social and cultural circumstances) must be used carefully to avoid confusion.

Furthermore, Cadernos CEDES observes the gender equity policy in forming its editorial board.

Instructions to authors

Each thematic issue of Cadernos CEDES will be composed of the following sections:

Presentation: argumentative text whose title must reflect the content of the proposal;

Articles: original and unpublished texts aligned with the theme of the proposal.

The evaluation process consists of four phases:

Phase 1: Submitting a proposal

Submission of proposals for thematic issues to the Editorial Committee can be done in three ways:

  1.  via spontaneous demand;
  2.  by guest editorship;
  3.  through an open call.

All proposals must follow the Instructions for Authors and must be sent to the following email address: revistas.cedes@linceu.com.br

Proposals must contain 10 to 12 articles that express the theoretical-methodological diversity of the field, covering different institutions and regions of the country, and necessarily include at least two articles by authors affiliated with the institution abroad.

A proposal submitted to the Cadernos CEDES Editorial Committee must contain:

Argumentative presentation, problematizing the topic at hand, including references, and not just a summary of each article that makes up the proposal;

Expanded summary of each article, with bibliographical references (300 to 500 words, not counting references) and three to five keywords per article;

Abbreviated CV of the authors (100 to 200 words), presenting their institutional links and links to the Lattes CV or similar.

An article part of a proposal cannot be submitted simultaneously to another journal. If an article is published in preprint, all information must appear in the Open Science Compliance Form.

The proposal will be evaluated by the Editorial Committee, which may approve, reject or request changes:

Phase 2: Submission of full texts of approved proposal

The proposal approved by the Editorial Committee must be submitted by the proponent, with the complete texts within 90 days, counting from the date of communication of approval, respecting the limits regarding the number of characters with space in the text:

Thematic number: 380,000 in total;

Presentation: between 10,000 and 20,000;

Articles between 28,000 and 35,000.

The text submission process takes place through the online system OJS, Open Journal System (SciELO), as support for electronic management and publication of scientific journals and must be submitted by the organizer (after registration in the system) in its complete form, with the Presentation and Articles in publication order.

A specific link with the title of the approved proposal will be made available to the dossier organizer, who will be responsible for guiding authors in submitting their articles to the system, including the names of co-authors, their contributions and other metadata.

It is up to the proposer of the proposal:

  • define the order of texts;
  • take care of the volume of characters in the set and compliance with text presentation standards;
  • write the Presentation;
  • supervise the submission work of guest authors;
  • monitor the possible process of reformulating articles with the authors;
  • Ensure the delivery of revised texts by the stipulated deadline.

Phase 3: Submission of proposal articles

After registering in the system, the author can submit their work.

When submitting the manuscript, the responsible author must obligatorily inform the designated fields in the article submission system of the following data: Full name, ORCID, institutional affiliation, email, and mini CV informing the degree.

Articles must be unpublished and may be written in Portuguese, Spanish, French and English. Texts in English and French must be submitted and revised in their original language and, after approval, must necessarily be translated into Portuguese by the authors or organizers. Articles in Spanish will be published in the original language. English and French texts will also be available in the original language.

All content will be evaluated for similarity using the Similarity Check system. The author will request a review if an unjustified degree of similarity is identified. If inappropriate conduct is identified, such as plagiarism or data falsification, the author(s) will become subject to editorial sanctions.

Authors must complete and attach the Open Science Compliance Form, which informs them about the status of the manuscript, whether it is a preprint or not, data availability, and openness to peer review.

Phase 4: Assessment process

A proposal approved by the Editorial Committee is monitored by two members, associate editors, throughout the editorial production process.

A thematic issue is analyzed as a whole, taking into account its relevance, originality and contribution to the field of education, just as each article that makes up an issue will be analyzed in its articulation and relevance to the set of texts, its theoretical-methodological consistency, analytical rigor, timeliness, quality of the text and suitability for the editorial scope.

Each proposed issue, with the complete texts, is sent for consideration by at least two reviewers from the Editorial Board or ad hoc specialists who argue about the consistency of the proposal and the pertinence of its acceptance – both the complete issue and each separate article.

The organizers of the thematic issues will have the option of nominating names of possible ad hoc referees for consideration by the Committee. The Editorial Committee may publish reviews anonymously or credit reviewers who have authorized their identification.

If there is any modification to the initial proposal without consultation and consent from the editors, the Thematic Issue proposal will be automatically eliminated.

Approval of the Thematic Issue does not imply automatic approval of the articles. Each article will be subject to a specific evaluation, at the end of which changes may be suggested, or its exclusion from the set of texts may be required. In this case, the organizer is responsible for replacing such an article, informing about the authors and contributions of the included text, and respecting the deadlines agreed with the editors. Substitutions may only occur with the explicit consent of the editors.

  • Internal titles and subtitles: Times New Roman 14 font, respectively, bold and centered.
  • Abstract and keywords: Except for reviews and interviews, texts must present a summary of up to eight hundred characters (with spaces) and a maximum of five keywords that make it possible to identify the article's content, separated by a period. Citations and References

Citations: Citations must follow the author-date system of the ABNT NBR 10520:2023:

- Author cited outside of parentheses: capital letter followed by lowercase letters with year and page:

Ex:

According to Elia (1979), Bopp laid the foundations for identifying kinship between languages.

- Author cited in parentheses: capital letter followed by lowercase letters with year and page.

Ex:

It is now known that the thesis that Vulgar Latin was homogeneous cannot be supported (Elia, 1979, p. 42).

- Indirect citation: do not use quotation marks, but indicate author, date and page.

Ex:

For Elia (1979, p. 2), there is a part-to-whole relationship between philology and linguistics.

- Direct quotations with less than three lines: use double quotation marks, also indicating author, date, and page; use single quotation marks for quotations within quotations.

Ex:

Superstrata are called “[...] the languages of conquering peoples that influence the language of conquered peoples without, however, absorbing it” (Elia, 1979, p. 110).

- Direct quotation with more than three lines: paragraph with 4 cm indentation, font size 10, without italics and quotation marks, indicating at the end in parentheses the author, date and page.

Ex:

As Elia recalls about Bopp's method,

[...] One of the method's most important results was the genealogical classification of languages, according to which a group of languages is traced back to the common ancestor (common Slavic, common Germanic, common Latin...), of which those are phases or differentiations (Elia, 1979, p. 5).

- Interventions in direct quotation: ellipsis in brackets for deletions; interpolations, additions or comments in brackets; emphasis or emphasis in italics.

Ex.:

They are called superstrata, "[...] the languages of conquering peoples that influence the language of conquered peoples without [...] absorbing it" (Elia, 1979, p. 110).

- Citation of more than one work by the same author published in the same year: add lowercase letters, in alphabetical order, after the date and without space in the text and references.

Ex:

Portuguese has been included in Romance studies in Brazil (Elia, 1979a, 1979b).

- Citation of more than one work by the same author published in different years: separate the year with a comma.

Ex:

Elia (1961, 1989) dealt with the issue of Brazilian Portuguese.

- Citation of a work with more than one author: separate each author by a semicolon.

Ex:

The dialectal differences between Brazilian Portuguese and Portuguese appear at different linguistic levels (Cunha; Cintra, 1985, p. 9-24).

- Citation of works by different authors: separate by work by semicolon in alphabetical order.

Ex:

Different academics have treated Romance linguistics in Brazil (Elia, 1979; Miazzi, 1976).

- Citation of a work extracted from another work: indicate the author and year of the citation, include the expression apud and indicate the author, year and page of the work in which the citation was made.

Ex:

As Meillet (1917-1919, p. 230 apud Elia, 1979, p. 4) had pointed out, “[...] les romanistes imitent trop souvent la grammaire comparée des langues indo-europeennes par ses mauvais cotés”.

References: must comply with NBR 6.023/2018 of ABNT, being ordered alphabetically by the first author's surname. All authors may be cited in references with up to three authors, separated by semicolons. In references with more than three authors, cite only the first author, followed by the expression "et al.". The accuracy of the references in the list and the correct citation of their data in the text is the responsibility of the work's author.
