Study of the process of desertification in the Caatinga: a proposal for Environmental Education

The physical and chemical soil restrictions of the semi-arid Northeast Brazil as well as intensive exploration of natural resources and extensive grazing make the Caatinga vulnerable to desertification and the threat of extinction of native species, like the mororó. The introduction of Environment Education in the schools is important especially when teachers and the school know their students and the community they belong to. They can develop environmental themes which interact with students' learning processes, make use of textbooks that present topics related to the environment and also draw in teachers from other subjects to get engaged in interdisciplinary projects. This article was aimed at investigating of deforestation of vegetable mororó in the locality of "Mororó do Hermínio", located in the Cariri of Paraíba and to propose environmental issues that can be applied in chemistry and science classes.
