The problem of group 3 in the Periodic Table: teaching it through argumentation and scientific explanation: part I

Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to provide some ideas based on research into didactic, history, and philosophy of chemistry that favor processes of argumentation and explanation in the classroom, making visible and explaining the inherent philosophical problems that such a discipline poses. On the basis of this purpose, we will introduce as a case of study the current problem of the membership to group 3 in the periodic table of elements and, consequently, how to promote scientific argumentation and explanation to understand its problematic and controversial nature. In this first part, we will introduce the problem in question, making visible the different interpretations and proposed solutions. In the second part, we will delve into the guidelines provided by research into the teaching of chemistry and the history of chemistry in order to promote scientific argumentation and explanation in the classroom and thus contribute to higher-level learning.
