Sex Education in the general secondary Education programme in Mozambique: analysis of the Education Strategic Plans 1999–2021

Abstract

This work sought to understand how sex Education is approached in the programme of General Secondary Education in Mozambique. Using bibliographical research, scientific and documentary materials were analysed, among which the different Strategic Education Plans of the Mozambican National Education System stand out. The results of the study reveal that the introduction of sex Education in Mozambican educational policies very strongly motivated by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Since its introduction in the Strategic Plan for Education, sex education has assumed different contours (for example: at the time of its introduction, it gave relevance to the technical-physiological aspects excluding the relational and emotional components of sexuality) and as the strategic plans for education are revised, the approach made to the concept of sex Education becomes more comprehensive, bringing in aspects of a biological, psychological and social nature.
