Expansion of higher education in Brazil and the private-market hegemony: the unesa case

The paper presents the expansion of private higher education, based on the analysis of an exemplary case: the Universidade Estácio de Sá (Unesa). In order to do so we have analyzed documents of Federal Council of Education, news from associations representing the business of education, Unesa′s documents, and the relevant legislation. The text systematizes initially the directions of private higher education in Brazil, following its movements since the military dictatorship to the present moment. Unesa is taken as a thread for the arguments, allowing discussing the contemporary developments in the private higher education, which include: the institutional concentration, financialization and globalization of higher education (Faperj, Capes, Uerj).
