Educação & Sociedade (Education & Society) is published by the Centro de Estudos Educação e Sociedade (Center of Studies Education and Society - CEDES). The journal accepts contributions in the form of articles and reviews in the Education Science fields, but reserves the right to publish or not the material spontaneously sent to the center.
Educação & Sociedade is one of the most important journals published today in the field of education in Brazil. Since 1978 it has been published three times a year, now reaching more than 56 issues. Furthermore, a special thematic issue has been organized yearly since 1995, making the journal a quarterly publication.
Designed to be an incentive to academic research and an instrument of broad debate on education in its several aspects, the journal has accumulated a large amount of analyses, information, discussions, theoretical sources, reports of pedagogical experiences, and others, which are of great interest for scientists and educators working on human sciences and other fields of knowledge.
In the scope covered by Educação & Sociedade, an aspect to be pointed out is its effort to be opened to Latin American and European countries. Indexed internationally, the journal receives contributions of authors from various countries. This cosmopolitan interchange makes possible to bring themes discussed by experts with rigor and novelty not only to the educational sector, but also to other areas, presenting renewed interest for several lines of academic research as well.
To briefly refer to the journal, the short title Educ. Soc. is recommended regarding bibliographies, footnotes, as well as bibliographical strips and references.

EDUCAÇÃO & SOCIEDADE: Revista de Ciências da Educação
The journal Educação & Sociedade (E&S) has as its scope the publication of research articles, essays, states-of-the-art, interviews and critical reviews of books based on social theories aimed at the analysis of the relationship between education and society, in accordance with Open Science communication practices.
Open Science is understood as the new way of formatting, designing, managing, communicating and evaluating research and its communication, advocating the transparency of processes and the availability of the components that ground their communication, such as methods, data and computer programs. This opening understands and promotes significant changes in the journal’s editing work, contributing to speed up the publication of research through continuous publication and the use of preprints repositories, in order to facilitate the evaluation of articles, the replicability of research and the reuse of collected data.
The adoption and improvement of scientific communication practices in accordance with Open Science supposes: open access; preprints as the beginning of the production flow of articles; transparent management of research data; availability of program codes and other materials underlying the articles; transparency and gradual opening of the manuscript evaluation process; public dissemination of research and interoperability with the global flow of scientific information and knowledge.
Preprints are manuscripts ready for submission to a journal, which are deposited by the author on a web server with previous open access, or in parallel with the submission to the journal by the author or the journal. The use of preprint as the author’s option supposes that, when submitting the article to the journal, he/she must inform if the manuscript is deposited in a preprints server, as well as its name and URL. This prepublication, besides accelerating the communication of research results, allows the author to receive a feedback of the work from readers and make modifications he/she deems pertinent.
Articles sent for publication must be unpublished, in printed or electronic media, except those previously made available in preprint servers, not being allowed its simultaneous submission for evaluation in another journal.
The publication of articles, critical reviews and other works in the E&S journal, after final approval, will demand from the author a solidary contribution to the editorial production, in order to ensure the sustainability of the journal in open access, which is edited by a nonprofit association, according to the letter, with justification and guidelines, presented in the page of the Centro de Estudos Educação e Sociedade (CEDES) and available as an attachment in this document.
In general, the processing time of the submitted papers is up to six months, between the submission date and the final decision, and up to twelve months, considering the submission and publication dates of the article.
When submitting the manuscript, the author must complete and attach the “Open Science Compliance Form” as a supplementary file, which must be downloaded, completed and included as a supplementary file during submission. Through it, the author declares to follow the practices of Open Science.
Educação & Sociedade is a multilingual journal and publishes articles written in Portuguese, Spanish, French and English, reviewed in their original language. The publication of the translation of the article into English and its version into Portuguese when originally written in a foreign language is encouraged, being the author’s responsibility to bear the respective translation, version and review costs.
Articles outside the scope of the journal will not be published; therefore, topics not based on social theories aimed at the analysis of the relationship between education and society or that are limited to replicating projects, research reports, chapters of thesis or dissertations and end-of-course papers. Neither works already published in proceedings and journals, national or foreign, in printed or digital format, in any language will be accepted, except original articles previously available in preprint servers. Also, reports of experiences and descriptive articles will not be accepted, without the problematization and due theoretical-methodological treatment of the subject.
The works and their eventual versions or translations will be made available in full, in electronic format, in the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) website. The E&S journal declares that the concepts and positions emitted in the published texts are the author’s entire responsibility, not necessarily reflecting the opinion of its editorial board.
Each author may have only one article in process at a time, and the publication of texts written by the same author will respect the twelve-month period between publications. It is worth noting that the guidelines listed here must be strictly followed by the authors, since failure to do so will result in immediate rejection of the text.
Ethical guideline practices
When submitting an article for publication in E&S, the author must declare that all ethical guidelines concerning the integrity of scientific activities carried out in the course of the research have been respected, as well as inform sources of funding, such as research agencies. If this is the case, the author must declare that the ethical principles have been submitted to and approved by the ethics committee of their institutions. The observance of good ethical practices in research is the author’s sole responsibility.
All articles will be evaluated disregarding social markers of difference, such as gender, sexual orientation, race, religious beliefs, nationality, among others, as well as the authors’ political positions.
As for the work’s authorship, everyone who contributed to the conception, development and analysis of the presented data are identified as authors. Therefore, it is the author’s responsibility to identify and include all coauthors who effectively collaborated in the writing of the article. All authors must accept, with evidence, the responsibility for the content of the article, besides registering their respective contributions at the end of the manuscript, in case of acceptance for publication.
If the author discovers that there has been any kind of relevant error after the article has been published, he/she must immediately inform the editors so that the appropriate notices can be published.
In relation to the identification of misconduct, composed of the practices of plagiarism, self-plagiarism and republishing of articles, as well as forgery of data, E&S informs that it uses tools for detection of plagiarism and self-plagiarism (antiplagiarism programs). However, if there is a failure in the process of detecting misconduct and the article is published, the author becomes liable to editorial sanctions, such as retraction of plagiarized or already published scientific articles.
The journal E&S is based on: the principles of the SciELO Codes of Ethics, presented in the “Guidelines on Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication”; the Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing”” recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE); in the principles of Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ); and in the principles of Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA).

Categories of accepted articles
Educação & Sociedade publishes texts from research, essays, states-of- the-art, interviews and book reviews, considering the originality and unprecedent nature of the subject, except for materials previously available on preprint serves. The density and the theoretical-methodological strictness concerning the approach to the subject will be essential criteria in the articles’s evaluation process and in the case of a research article, it will be necessary to inform the title of the project and the funding agency, if applicable.
According to the theme, the texts are published in the following sections:
Editorial: Section dedicated to the publication of critical texts elaborated by the Editorial Board of the Journal, dealing with scientific themes, susceptible to citations, under the responsibility of the editors and elaborated for the volume;
Dossier: Section intended to publish articles on specific themes and organized in dossier form. This section consists of a presentation of the subject matter, which may be cited, prepared by its organizers;
Articles: Section destined to the publication of texts in two categories, with predominance of research articles, aligned with Open Science:
Review & Synthesis: Section intended to publish state-of-the-art or knowledge. Here are published studies, with theoretical methodological foundations, on themes and problems referenced in a survey of updated data and with critical analysis of the field;
Analysis of Pedagogical Practices: Section destined to the publication of articles based on social theories, related to the studies on pedagogical practices and their effects inside and outside classrooms;
Formation of Education Professionals: Section destined to the publication of productions that have as their scope to reflect on the initial and continued formation processes of professionals linked to the educational field;
Debates & Controversy: Section destined to the publication of articles that result from research or essays that problematize current and controversial themes about the relationship between education and society;
Images & Words: Section destined to the publication of works on themes related to media and education, as well as essays and critical reviews of books, films and other cultural products of interest to the educational field. The reviews will be accepted if they present a critical character, bringing new knowledge, not being confused, therefore, with the summary of works. Book reviews outside the field of Educational Sciences will not be accepted for publication;
Special Section: Section intended for the publication of articles resulting from research related to a theme defined annually by the editors, in view of their relevance to the study and analysis qualified and based on social theories articulated with education and society.
The evaluation of research manuscripts is the main role of the journal E&S in the following dimensions: analysis of the research according to the scientific method; obedience to ethical canons; and alignment with Open Science practices and the thematic area of research. The editorial policy of the journal defines the following criteria for the evaluation of texts: compliance with formatting requirements; originality; thematic relevance; clarity and precision in the delimitation of the object; theoretical and methodological consistency of the content; analytical accuracy; current events; quality of the text; and adequacy to the editorial scope.
The submitted works go through four phases of evaluation. The first consists of the screening carried out by the Editors-in-Chief, who examine the adequacy of the work to the editorial line and scope of the journal, as well as to the formal requirements, and its potential for publication. The second phase refers to the preliminary evaluation by the section editors, which seeks to identify the contribution and quality of the article to the journal, in order to verify accuracy in the delimitation of the object, theoretical and methodological consistency and analytical accuracy. The third phase consists of the peer review process, with indication by the editors of at least two reviewers in a double-blind evaluation, except for articles made available on preprint servers or whose authors opt for open evaluation (“Open Science Compliance Form”) occurring in “simple blind” evaluation. Lastly, the fourth phase consists of submitting all articles approved in the previous phases to a similarity assessment process resulting from the use of an antiplagiarism system. In case of detection of a high degree of similarity to a text already published, the article may be rejected, in view of the originality requirement, with exception for articles on a preprint server.
The final editorial decision of the Editors-in-Chief on the articles will be supported by the recommendation of the section editor and the reviewers, as well as by the author’s implementation of the recommended adjustments, if applicable. It is therefore up to the editors, after peer review, to recommend acceptance, rejection or reformulation of the works. In case of reformulation, the texts will be returned to the reviewers for final evaluation. The evaluation result will be forwarded to the author and may include: 1) acceptance; 2) indication to make mandatory corrections; 3) new submission for evaluation; and 4) rejection.
Submission of papers
The E&S journal operates exclusively on a system of on-line submission (SciELO), which uses the Open Journal System to support the electronic management of scientific journals publication. In this way, the whole process of capture and arbitration of the articles passes, necessarily, through the mentioned electronic platform. Each author must register into the system to submit their works for consideration. Access to the registration system can be made from the link <https://submission.scielo.br/index.php/es/user/register> and, after registration, the users will be able to submit their work, from the link <https://submission.scielo.br/index.php/es/submissions>.
The completion of all metadata, including ORCID and institutional link, is a mandatory condition for the article to have continuity in its processing in the journal, being mandatory to inform, if applicable, the sources of funding for the research that originated the work. The author can follow the whole text arbitration process through the system, from his/her login and password.
The submission must follow the next steps, without which the article will not be processed:
Considering the consolidation of Open Science processes, the author is encouraged to share all contents (data, program codes and other materials) underlying the manuscript text, before or at the time of publication. Exceptions are allowed in cases of legal and ethical issues. The objective is to facilitate the evaluation of the manuscript and, if approved, to contribute to the preservation and reuse of data and information, as well as to the replicability of research.
For sharing, the author can use the SciELO repository or its institutions, as well as identify relevant and certified repositories by area (https://www.re3data.org/). Alternatively, the author may declare that the data will be made available upon direct request to the author.
The repository in which the data and information are found, if any, should be cited in the text, preferably in the methodology section, and included in the list of references.
Formal presentation of originals
The authors must submit the text for orthographic and grammar revision before presenting it to the journal. The text, including abstracts, notes and bibliographical references, must have a minimum of 35,000 and a maximum of 60,000 characters with spaces, unless there are exceptional cases, at the discretion of the editors, and the reviews must not exceed 10,000 characters with spaces and the articles submitted to the “Review and Synthesis” section, due to their specificity of content, 65,000 characters with spaces.
The originals must be submitted in .doc or .docx (Word for Windows), Open Office or .rtf, in A4 format, with the following characteristics:
Title and subtitle of the article: Times New Roman 16 font, centralized, bold, with a maximum of 12 words, representing the content of the article. Title and subtitle must also be presented in Portuguese, English and Spanish (or French, if the article is in this language) and must be in bold italics.
Internal titles and subtitles: font Times New Roman 14, respectively, in bold, and centralized.
Abstract and keywords: Except for reviews and interviews, the texts must present an abstract of up to eight hundred characters with spaces, and a maximum of five keywords that allow the identification of the article content, separated by periods. Use Times New Roman 12 font, no indent. Abstract and keywords must also be presented in Portuguese, English and Spanish (the Spanish version may be replaced by the French version in cases where the article was originally written in that language).
Text: font Times New Roman 12, paragraphs without indent, spacing between lines of 1.15 and 6 pt before and after paragraphs, margin of 3 cm.
Tables and graphs: must be in the body of the text, presented in accordance with the norms of the Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas (ABNT). They must be identified with their title (obligatory) and caption (if applicable). Tables must always be in editable format and never in image.

Requirements for submitting the manuscript
When submitting a manuscript, the authors must declare that:
Guidelines for forwarding thematic dossiers proposals
Educação & Sociedade also publishes thematic dossiers, according to the scope of the journal, which can be designed from proposals or calls from the editors of the journal or the academic community, national and international.
The dossier proposals submitted by the academic community will be examined by the Editors and Associated Editors of the Educação & Sociedade, who will be in charge of deciding on their approval. Priority will be given to proposals that present relevant and emerging themes, addressing the relationship between education and society. The proposals should be sent to the e-mail: email@example.com
These are minimum requirements for the submission of proposals for thematic dossiers:
The deadline for the review of a dossier proposal by the editorial committee is a maximum of three months, after which the organizer will receive an e-mail informing him of the result.
If the proposal is approved, the organizer must request all authors who compose the dossier to register in the SciELO platform and submit their articles for evaluation through it (see Submission of Papers, previously), according to dates agreed between the organizer and editors of the journal.
If there is any modification to the initial proposal or failure to meet the deadlines, without consultation and consent of the editors, the file proposal will be automatically eliminated.
The approval of the dossier does not imply automatic approval of the articles contained within it. Each article will be subjected to specific evaluation, at the end of which changes may be suggested or its exclusion from the dossier required. In this case, the organizer responsible for replacing such file, respecting the deadlines agreed with the editors. Replacements may only occur with the explicit consent of the editors.
Only dossiers with a minimum of six articles with favorable opinions will be published.
The organizer is responsible for following the editorial production of the dossier during all stages, acting, whenever requested, as an intermediary between editors and writers.
The organizer, author of the presentation, may be the author of an article.
The set of articles in the dossier should occupy a maximum of ten articles, obeying the rules for submission of articles of E&S.
The missing cases will be analyzed by the editors of the journal E&S.
Attachment I. Letter to Authors
We wrote this text with the intention of informing you the reasons for asking the authors for a contribution to the editorial production with the certainty of their understanding and participation.
The collaboration or association is requested only from authors with an article approved for publication (the submission of articles is free of charge).
We propose to the authors (all of them) that they choose one of the two alternatives that follow:
1st alternative – AUTHOR’S COLLABORATION FROM THE ASSOCIATION TO CEDES:
Authors may choose to join CEDES institution. In this case, the value of the author’s association and of each coauthor, individually, in 2020, is R$ 350,00 (three hundred and fifty reais). For foreign authors, US$ 100.00 (one hundred dollars).
2nd alternative – COLABORATION FOR ARTICLE EDITORIAL PRODUCTION for the year 2020:
We present Our Justifications
The first issue of the journal Educação & Sociedade, edited by the Faculdade de Educação da Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp), was launched during the I Seminário da Educação Brasileira (SEB), held in 1978, at Unicamp. The Centro de Estudos Educação e Sociedade (CEDES) was founded in March 1979, in Campinas (SP), as a result of the actions of some educators concerned with reflection and actions linked to the relationship between education and society. Since its creation, CEDES has been editing the journal and, since 1980, has also been editing Cadernos CEDES.
In its forty years of existence, CEDES, even having gone through several financial crises, has followed its line of commitment to Brazilian education, being financed exclusively by its associates and contributions from government institutions. However, since 1997 – from its incorporation, in open access, to SciELO, publicizing its content – there has been a progressive reduction in the number of associates, which has generated difficulties in financing our publications.
Currently, we have about 145 associates to CEDES. This number is variable, since the association lasts one year. The associations, besides the historical and permanent ones, are motivated by: interest in participating in SEB and editorial productions; involvement in the monitoring of educational policies; publication of works.
Added to these difficulties are the reduction in funding and government contributions to education and science, as well as the frequent price increases in publishing production services, so we had no alternative but to suspend the printed versions of the journal Educação & Sociedade and of Cadernos CEDES since 2019.
Today, the average continuous production cost of Educação & Sociedade is R$ 1,700.00 per article of 45,000 characters. Only one fifth of this amount is covered by the support of the editing promotion agencies (CNPq/CAPES), the rest being the counterpart of CEDES. Unfortunately, in an unprecedented way, in the year 2020, we will not have CNPq or Capes resources for the journal.
Faced with this scenario, seeking a balance between our democratic principle of free and open access to the production of Educational Sciences and the financial maintenance of our publications, the editorial committee of Educação & Sociedade and the board of CEDES decided to change their instructions to the authors, indicating that they must make a contribution in collaboration with the editorial maintenance of the publication. CEDES members are exempt from this contribution.
The members of CEDES will continue to count on the benefit of differentiated condition in the participation of SEB and, furthermore, will be exempted from the collaboration to the editorial production required from the authors of our publications.

In these difficult moments that Brazilian democracy and education are going through, we count on our associates to continue acting in our historical mission of spreading the knowledge produced in the Education Sciences and in defense of public, state, free and socially referenced education.
We know that we are all going through difficulties, but we need to think about the dimension of the fight we are fighting: the maintenance of Educação & Sociedade, which has credibility and visibility as marks of its quality, proven, for example, by its permanence as A1 in QUALIS/CAPES, despite the crises and pressure through which CEDES passes. Furthermore, what we propose as editorial support value does not fully cover your editorial costs.

Through this form, the authors inform the journal about the conformity of the manuscript with Open Science communication practices. The authors are requested to inform: (a) if the manuscript is a preprint and, if so, its location; (b) whether data, software codes and other materials underlying the manuscript text are properly cited and referenced; and, (c) whether opening options are accepted in the peer review process.

Authors are encouraged to make available previously or at the time of publication all content (data, software codes and other materials) underlying the manuscript text.
