The creation of ANPEd's Scientific Committee represented an important mark for the peer evaluation of academic production in the field of postgraduate studies in education of Brazil. Based on personal recollections and testimonies of researchers who participated in the creation and implementation of the association as well as with articles on its "scientific statute", this article sought to analyse the effects produced by the institutionalization of this level in the organization of the annual meetings, in the relations with the working groups and in the association's power dynamic. It also emphasises the strategic importance of the Scientific Committee for the evaluation of scientific production in education, given the growth in the number of programmes and the increase in the number of theses and dissertations. This historical reconstruction serves to identify emerging and urgent themes which need to be faced with careful and competent reflection by all those researchers involved in the field.
