Dissatisfaction among Medical School Faculty at the Federal University in Santa Maria, Brazil

Abstract:

This study focused on 44 medical school professors at the Federal University in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, with the aim of identifying possible indicators of faculty dissatisfaction. The sample consisted of tenured professors who were teaching at the time the questionnaries were distributed and included 33 men and 11 women. The largest sub-group of professor, (13) belonged to the Department of Internal Medicine, 79% were married, the mean age was 49 years, and mean time on the faculty was 19 years. Some 25% were associate professors in the career path anel 75% had training as specialists, and the sample was responsible for 32 different course disciplines. Data analysis showed indicators of faculty dissatisfaction in relation to the evaluation of the career path, the value of professional goals, expectations related to both eficacy and control, causal attributions of failures related both to locus and stability, and coping strategies. .It was worthy of note that 100% of the interviewers had not intended to take up teaching
