Deaf literature and primary school: cultural recoveries from a translation model with visual specificities

Abstract :

The present work will concentrate on the description of deaf literature, based on a bibliographic review of children's literature in general, and of specific work concerning visual pedagogy, in the specific field of deafness. We will, in addition, reflect on the translation work of a literary piece for elementary education deaf students, by the author Ziraldo Alves Pinto, in a school in the municipal system of Campinas (in the State of São Paulo), which is engaged in a project of bilingual education for the deaf. The translation work was performed by a deaf educator that is part of the team of the bilingual school. The narrative (in Libras - the Brazilian sign language) of the translated work by the pupils was recorded, and from those narratives we carried out some survey on reading, intervention and creative work.
