This paper presents the result of a bibliographical investigation that surveyed 58 Brazilian periodicals published in Brazil between 1982 and 2002 in the areas of education and communication, and read 1,599 papers. The main objective was to draw a profile of the Brazilian academic research on the problems involving the fields of education and communication and to identify some relevant aspects or gaps they might present. Based on quantitative and qualitative data collected by means of research tools - questionnaires with open and close questions - specifically developed for this study, our methodology aimed at identifying the form, content and geographic location of this production. The results here presented are limited to the analysis of some variables of the research tool.
