Darwinianamente, los grupos taxonómicos son entendidos como entidades históricas que surgen en un momento de la evolución y que siempre pueden desaparecer. Pero esos grupos también fueron entendidos por muchos naturalistas como clases naturales; es decir, como tipos permanentes, a-históricos. Es mi interés señalar algunas de las formas que ese pensamiento tipológico de hecho ha tomado, subrayando que la adopción de esa perspectiva tipológica, además de no responder a compromisos teológicos, tampoco tiene porqué obedecer a la adopción de una ontología que pueda estar en conflicto con la ciencia natural. Analizaré así el modo en el que Buffon entendió las especies y el modo en los que Cuvier y Lamarck entendieron los órdenes taxonómicos superiores.

Abstract in English:

From a Darwinian point of view, taxonomic groups are understood as historical entities that arise at an evolutionary moment and that can always disappear. But these groups were also understood by many naturalists as natural kinds; in other words, as permanent, ahistorical types. I will explore some of the forms that this typological thought took, showing that this typological perspective neither depends on theological beliefs, nor obeys the adoption of an ontology that might contradict natural science. Thus I shall analyze Buffon's understanding of species and the ways in which Cuvier and Lamarck understood the higher taxonomic orders.

O jovem médico escocês Mungo Park chegou à África em 1795, aos 23 anos, com uma missão tão específica quanto complexa naqueles tempos: percorrer o curso do rio Níger. Em 1799, o relato dessa jornada veio a público em uma publicação que vendeu 1.500 cópias em apenas um mês, estimulando o aparecimento de mais duas edições da obra no mesmo ano e sua tradução para o francês e o alemão no ano seguinte. Neste artigo, examina-se a narrativa de Mungo Park considerando-se as relações entre trópico, ciência e viagem nos primeiros tempos do expansionismo inglês sobre o interior da África.

The young Scottish physician Mungo Park, aged 23, arrived in Africa in 1795 with a mission as specific as it was complex in those bygone days, namely to travel the entire length of the River Niger. In 1799, the story of this journey was published in a book that sold 1500 copies in the first month alone, with two further editions published that same year, as well as the translation of the work into French and German the following year. In this article, the narrative of Mungo Park is examined by taking due consideration of the relationship between the tropics, science and travel in the early days of British expansionism into the heart of Africa.

Na história quinhentista do Brasil, são muito raras as referências aos profissionais da saúde. Na expedição de Edward Fenton, despachada pela Coroa inglesa em 1582 para fundar um entreposto comercial na Ásia, vinha o famoso cirurgião-barbeiro e físico (médico) John Banister. Desviada da sua rota original para repetir os feitos de Francis Drake, a esquadra fez escala na África, atravessou o Atlântico e ancorou no litoral catarinense. Nessas águas, a expedição degenerou em ações piráticas e retornou fracassada à Europa. John Banister é considerado aquele que libertou a anatomia inglesa da sua escravidão medieval, lançando sobre ela a luz do Renascimento. Foi a primeira vez que alguém dessa envergadura na área da saúde visitava estas latitudes.

In Brazil's sixteenth-century history, very few references are made to health professionals. On the expedition of Edward Fenton, dispatched by the English Crown in 1582 to set up a trading post in Asia, was the famous barber-surgeon and physician John Banister. The naval squadron, diverted from its original route to repeat the feats of Sir Francis Drake, stopped over in Africa, crossed the Atlantic and anchored off the Santa Catarina coast in Brazil. In these waters, the expedition degenerated into piracy and returned unsuccessful to Europe. John Banister is considered the person who liberated English anatomy from mediaeval slavery, shedding upon it the light of the Renaissance. It was the first time that anyone of this importance in the area of health had visited these latitudes.

Eles constituem um bom termômetro para se avaliar as transformações que se operavam no país, nos âmbitos social, econômico e político.

This analysis of the Brazilian geography congresses sponsored by the Geography Society of Rio de Janeiro between 1909 and 1944 identifies commonalities as well as differences over the years. Given how these scientific events focused on both the state of the art within the field as well as on its overall development, such an analysis serves as a good thermometer for measuring the social, economic, and political changes underway in Brazil.

Pela análise de prontuários médicos de instituição para tratamento de alienados, dirigida por uma associação de seguidores do espiritismo de orientação kardecista, identificam-se as diferentes percepções e estratégias de tratamento e administração social da loucura desenvolvidas por setores da população brasileira na primeira metade do século XX, numa região interiorana do país. Enfatiza-se o aspecto multidimensional da experiência da loucura, tomando-a como acontecimento sociocultural capaz de produzir diferentes análises e interpretações por grupos heterogêneos de atores sociais, que irão interpretá-la a partir de seus sistemas próprios de significação e entendimento.

Through analysis of the medical charts from an institution for treatment of the insane run by an association of Kardecist spiritists, it is possible to identify the various perceptions and strategies for treatment and social control of insanity developed by different sectors of the Brazilian population in the first half of the twentieth century in the Brazilian countryside. The multidimensional aspect of the experience of insanity is stressed, as it is a sociocultural event capable of different analyses and interpretations by heterogeneous groups of social actors, who interpret it based on their own systems of meaning and understanding.

Se realiza una revisión histórica, conceptual y cultural del concepto de recuperación en el contexto de la salud mental. Se revisan y discuten los resultados de los trabajos realizados en la última década sobre experiencias subjetivas de personas con trastornos mentales graves en proceso de recuperación y se analizan las diferencias entre los conceptos de rehabilitación, integración y recuperación. Tras una introducción histórica, la descripción de las experiencias de recuperación se ordenan en tres apartados: identidad y control de la propia vida; relaciones personales y comunidad; y recursos materiales, trabajo y otras actividades sociales. El concepto de recuperación implica nuevos retos y tensiones que los procesos de reforma de los sistemas de salud mental en Europa y América deben asumir.

This historical, conceptual, and cultural review of the concept of recovery within the realm of mental health discusses the last decade's research into the subjective experiences of people in the process of recovering from serious mental disorders and analyzes the differences between the notions of rehabilitation, integration, and recovery. After presenting a historical introduction, the article describes recovery experiences from three angles: identity and control over one's own life; personal and community relationships; and material resources, work, and other social activities. The concept of recovery entails new challenges and tensions that must be taken into account in the reform of mental health systems in Europe and the Americas.

A década de 1950 e sobretudo a de 1960 foram marcadas por constantes revisões dos valores e costumes sociais. Foi nesse contexto que os movimentos de juventude ocuparam a cena, sendo a contracultura o maior deles. Os mantenedores do poder, entretanto, classificaram como loucura os comportamentos e as atitudes de seus adeptos. Contra essa forma de fabricação da loucura surgiu uma corrente de pensamento denominada antipsiquiatria, que questionaria a psiquiatria em seu cerne. Este artigo critica os modelos psiquiátricos daquele momento, estabelecendo relação entre os movimentos de contracultura e de antipsiquiatria.

The 1950s and especially the 1960s saw constant revisions of social values and customs, with young people's movements playing a major role, above all the so-called counter-culture. The powers-that-be categorized the behavior and attitudes of the movement's followers as constituting madness. This making of madness gave rise to a stream of thought known as anti-psychiatry, which calls into question the very essence of psychiatry. The present article criticizes the psychiatric models of that era and draws links between counter-culture movements and anti-psychiatry.

A aculturação da medicina chinesa nos países ocidentais a partir da década de 1970 tem criado questionamentos sobre sua eficácia, validade e possibilidades de atuação. A pesquisa em medicina chinesa é um desafio metodológico que tem sido fundamentado em ensaios clínicos estatísticos. Neste artigo, elabora-se uma análise crítica dos problemas resultantes da aplicação de metodologias científicas comuns à biomedicina na pesquisa em medicina chinesa, propondo reorientações em suas diretrizes. A análise de textos é a metodologia principal e aborda-se o objeto a partir de referenciais teóricos das ciências sociais aplicadas à saúde.

The acculturation of Chinese medicine by the West since the 1970s has raised questions about the efficacy, validity, and potential of this form of medicine. Researchers in the field have agreed that studies on Chinese medicine present a methodological challenge. Research conducted in recent decades has focused basically on statistical clinical trials. This article offers a critical analysis of the problems encountered when applying to Chinese medicine the scientific methods common to biomedicine and also suggests new directions for such research guidelines. Relying primarily on the method of text analysis, the issue is approached by applying theoretical references from the social sciences to health.

Analisam-se interações estabelecidas entre os Baniwa, grupo indígena do Alto Rio Negro, e equipes multidisciplinares de saúde que desenvolvem vacinação naquela região. Apoiando-se no enfoque da antropologia da doença, em estudos de etnologia rionegrina e na teoria das representações sociais, busca-se apreender as interpretações indígenas sobre ações de vacinação e sobre as doenças por elas evitadas. Os resultados mostram que as ideias biomédicas sobre vacina são reinterpretadas à luz da cosmologia baniwa. Conclui-se que a vitalidade do pensamento baniwa os impulsiona a interpretar as ações biomédicas conforme suas características culturais, mas o desencontro de perspectivas entre indígenas e profissionais de saúde tem implicações negativas no processo de vacinação.

The article analyzes interactions between the Baniwa, an indigenous group from the Alto Rio Negro region, and the multi-disciplinary healthcare teams that conduct vaccination there. Approaching from the perspectives of the anthropology of disease, studies of Rio Negro ethnology, and the theory of social representations, the study endeavors to comprehend indigenous interpretations of vaccination and the diseases these seek to prevent. Results show that biomedical ideas about vaccines are re-interpreted through Baniwa cosmology. It is concluded that the vigor of Baniwa thought encourages these indigenes to interpret biomedical action in accord with cultural features and that the clash between Baniwa outlooks and those of healthcare providers has negative repercussions on the vaccination process.

Pretende-se explorar contradições e confluências entre o meio (fotográfico) e a imagem do índio brasileiro sob uma perspectiva histórica da fotografia brasileira. A imagem do índio nessa fotografia manifesta-se em três momentos distintos. Na fase inicial, no lugar do exótico, contraditório ao sentido moderno da fotografia durante o Segundo Império. Na segunda fase, as fronteiras entre o etnográfico e o nacional se diluem, nos primeiros cinquenta anos do século XX, a exemplo da Comissão Rondon/Seção de Estudos do SPI e do fotojornalismo moderno no Brasil da revista O Cruzeiro. No terceiro momento, as manifestações de uma etnopoética das fotografias de Claudia Andujar fazem meio e imagem se fundirem como lugar etnográfico na arte contemporânea.

The article explores contradictions and convergences between a medium (photography) and the image of the Brazilian Indian from the perspective of the history of Brazilian photography. During the first of three distinct moments, the image of the Indian was of someone exotic, in contradiction with the modern meaning of photography under the Second Empire. During the second moment, in the first fifty years of the twentieth century, the boundaries between ethnography and Brazil as a nation were blurred, as exemplified by the Rondon Commission/Indian Protection Bureau's Research Section (Serviço de Proteção ao Índio) and Brazil's modern photojournalism, as found in the magazine Cruzeiro. During the third moment, the expressions of an ethno-poetry present in the photographs of Cláudia Andujar can be seen to blend medium and image as an ethnographic space in contemporary art.
