RESUMO O presente artigo considera um problema fundamental das sociedades modernas que se manifesta nos fenômenos da pobreza e da riqueza. Esse problema será tratado a partir de três pensadores cujas percepções serão condensadas em uma posição teórica coerente: Luhmann, Hegel e Foucault. Atravessar essas posições permitirá mostrar em que sentido uma constelação de seus pensamentos pode ajudar a entender os temas prementes da sociedade moderna.

ABSTRACT The present article considers a fundamental problem of modern societies that manifests in the phenomena of poverty and wealth. This problem will be addressed by drawing on three thinkers who provide insights that will be condensed into one coherent theoretical position: Luhmann, Hegel and Foucault. Traversing these positions will allow to show in what way a constellation of their thoughts can help to understand pressing issues of modern society.

RESUMO O objetivo deste artigo é argumentar que situações de privação material são inerentemente coercitivas. Para isso, avaliam-se teorias da justiça para as quais a pobreza não representaria uma forma de intervenção coercitiva em contextos de livre-mercado. Argumenta-se aqui que a pobreza precisa ser concebida como uma posição social subordinada e, portanto, um caso flagrante de injustiça social.

ABSTRACT The article argues that material deprivation is a kind of coercive social situation. It evaluates some theories of justice for whom poverty would not count as a coercive interference on agency in contexts of free market interactions. It is showed that poverty is to be conceived as a subordinate social position and therefore a flagrant form of social injustice.

RESUMO Este artigo tem como objetivo debater o papel dos subsistemas de políticas no processo de políticas públicas, destacando manutenções e mudanças na sua condução. Em especial, analisa o processo de agendamento e de formulação da Política Nacional de Juventude no Brasil a partir do governo Lula, dando ênfase às disputas simbólicas e políticas em torno de ideias e valores conduzidas pelos diferentes atores que permearam os subsistemas da política.

ABSTRACT This article aims to discuss the role of policy subsystems in the public policy process, highlighting maintenance and change in their implementation. In particular, it analyzes the process of agenda-setting and policy formulation of the Política Nacional de Juventude [National Youth Policy] in Brazil during the Lula government, emphasizing the symbolic and political disputes around ideas and values conducted by the different actors that permeated the subsystems of this sectoral policy.

RESUMO O artigo identifica duas abordagens usuais na análise da laicidade no Brasil. Uma é inclusiva e diz respeito às religiões públicas, enquanto a outra é exclusiva e diz respeito à justificação pública do uso do poder do Estado. Argumenta-se que estas são duas dimensões da laicidade que constituem, de forma coerente, um conceito unificado do significado normativo do Estado laico.

ABSTRACT This article identifies two common approaches from which secularism is analyzed in Brazil. The first one, inclusivist, refers to public religions, while the second one, exclusivist, refers to public justifications of the use of state power. Contrary to a fairly extended view, it is argued that these are two dimensions of secularism from which it is possible to derive normative principles that are not mutually incompatible.

RESUMO Este artigo centra-se nas disputas legais entre o governo federal dos Estados Unidos e o Centro Espírita Beneficente União do Vegetal (UDV), bem como na regulamentação do uso religioso da ayahuasca naquele país. O nosso objetivo é apresentar as principais questões que estiveram em jogo durante as disputas, especialmente a relação entre os limites do princípio de liberdade religiosa quando associado ao uso de substâncias controladas.

ABSTRACT This article focuses on the legal disputes between the u.s. government and the Centro Espírita Beneficente União do Vegetal (UDV), as well as on the regulation of the religious use of ayahuasca by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). Our aim is to present the main issues that were at stake throughout the dispute, especially the relationship between the limits of religious freedom when associated with the use of controlled substances.

RESUMO Na tentativa de extinguir o Mau Mau, movimento impulsionado por questões fundiárias no Quênia, o governo colonial decretou estado de emergência em 1952, criando aldeias para as quais foi deslocada a população kikuyu, além de campos de detenção para os guerrilheiros. Nesse contexto, interessa analisar as dinâmicas das relações entre missionários da Consolata e guerrilheiros Mau Mau, que culminaram numa aproximação entre esses e os kikuyus.

ABSTRACT To extinguish the Mau Mau, a movement driven by land issues that marked Kenya, the colonial government declared a state of emergency in 1952, creating villages to which the Kikuyu population was displaced, as well as detention camps for the guerrillas. Therefore, it is worth analyzing the relationships amongst Consolata missionaries and the Mau Mau guerrillas, which led to an approximation between these missionaries and the Kikuyu.

RESUMO Obra-prima de Amós Oz, A caixa-preta é um romance epistolar que conta a história de Alex, Ilana e Michel, um triângulo amoroso repleto de ressentimentos. O objetivo do presente artigo é entender como Oz explica, através da história, a conturbada sociedade israelense dos anos 1960. Trazendo alegorias para temas como religião, fanatismo, memória e questões étnicas, deciframos como Oz enxerga uma nação à beira do colapso social.

ABSTRACT Amos Oz’s masterpiece, The Black Box is an epistolary novel that tells the story of Alex, Ilana and Michel, in a love triangle filled with resentments. The purpose of this article is to understand how Oz explains the troubled Israeli society of the 1960s, with his book. Bringing allegories to themes such as religion, fanaticism, memory and ethnic issues, we decipher how Oz interprets the ruptures of a nation on the brink of social collapse.

RESUMO A partir da análise minuciosa de um poema em prosa de O spleen de Paris e de um capítulo das Memórias póstumas de Brás Cubas, este artigo busca elucidar a proximidade formal entre as duas obras e mostrar como, ao mesmo tempo que se consolidava uma tradição de jovens baudelairianos leitores de As flores do mal, um pequeno grupo de escritores, dentre os quais Machado, exercitava-se na forma livre da prosa poética de Baudelaire.

ABSTRACT Through minute analysis of a prose poem from Paris Spleen and a chapter from The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas, this paper seeks to elucidate the formal proximity between the two oeuvres and to show how, while a tradition of young baudelairians readers of The Flowers of evil was being consolidated, a small group of writers, among which Machado, was practicing the free form of Baudelaire’s poetical prose.

RESUMO Este artigo analisa a forma como a mudança social e a reprodução das desigualdades são representadas no romance Vencidos e degenerados (1915), do escritor negro maranhense José do Nascimento Moraes (1882-1958). Confere-se destaque ao modo como a figura do feitor, mais do que um tipo histórico ou social reconhecível, sintetiza as relações de força que articulavam raça, trabalho e poder no pós-abolição.

ABSTRACT This article analyzes how social change and the reproduction of inequalities are represented in the novel Vencidos e degenerados (1915) by the black writer from Maranhão José do Nascimento Moraes (1882-1958). Highlights are given to the way in which the figure of the overseer, more than a recognizable historical or social type, synthesizes the power relations that articulated race, work and power in the post-abolition period.
