Both SB and placebo conditions showed ~15% reductions in blood glucose after exercise. SB was safe, well tolerated, and effective, with no significant adverse effects reported.

HIGHLIGHTS The micelles exhibited spherical morphology, hydrodynamic diameters ranging from 95 to 260 nm, and good colloidal stability with a low critical micelle concentration (CMC) of 0.0114 mg/mL. Flaxseed-loaded micelles showed potent concentration-dependent cytotoxicity against MCF-7 cell line, with IC50 values of 0.08 μg/mL (24 h) and 0.096 μg/mL (48 h). Flaxseed-loaded micelles significantly inhibited MCF-7 cell migration, reducing wound closure to 1.7% at IC50 after 48h. The study highlights the potential of phytochemicals-based polymeric micelles as a promising and biocompatible nanocarrier system for breast cancer treatment.

Cisplatin caused pathological changes, apoptosis and oxidative stress in reproductive tissues.

Addressing Interdisciplinary Bias, since using Impact Factor (IF) alone in interdisciplinary bibliographic portfolios can introduce bias due to the variation in metric scales across fields like Social Sciences, Arts, and Humanities. The use of normalized metrics (SNIP and JCI) is proposed to mitigate these disparities and enhance fairness and comparability. Development of a Predictive Model for SNIP based on JCI, using the SMOReg algorithm, enabling normalization even when SNIP is unavailable. HIGHLIGHTS There was a significant expression of MMP-26 in nodular goiter and papillary thyroid carcinoma. MMP-26 showed good sensitivity for identifying nodular goiter and papillary thyroid carcinoma. The results suggest the involvement of MMP-26 in the pathogenesis of thyroid tumors. MMP-26 is a promising complementary biomarker for the diagnosis of nodular thyroid lesions.

HIGHLIGHTS Active silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were prepared using hexane extract from P. pubescens seeds (HE-PP). HE-PP-mediated silver nanoparticles showed potent activity against oral, phytopathogenic, H. pylori and mycobacterial strains. Consistent antibacterial activities were observed regardless of bacterial resistance profiles. FTIR analysis confirmed reduction of silver ions by bioactive plant compounds. Nanoparticles showed favorable selectivity toward bacteria over human cells.

Abstract Plumeria pudica Jacq., popularly known as “bridal bouquet,” is a plant from the Apocynaceae family, notable for its abundant latex production. Traditionally, P. pudica has been used in medicinal preparations in Asia and Latin America to treat various ailments. This study aimed to investigate the pro- and anti-inflammatory activities of two distinct fractions of P. pudica latex: the dialysate latex (DLPp) and the latex protein fraction (LPPp). These activities were evaluated using a paw edema model in mice. Promethazine hydrochloride (PromH) was used to modulate DLPp-induced inflammation, and the anti-inflammatory potential of DLPp was further tested against carrageenan-induced inflammation. Additionally, the phytochemical profiles, total phenol, flavonoid, and protein contents, as well as histamine concentrations in both fractions, were analyzed. DLPp induced a dose-dependent pro-inflammatory response within the first 30 minutes, which was significantly inhibited by both PromH and LPPp. Biochemical analyses revealed the presence of histamine-like molecules in DLPp. LPPp did not elicit pro-inflammatory effects, whereas DLPp failed to suppress carrageenan-induced inflammation. These findings demonstrate that P. pudica latex contains both pro- and anti-inflammatory components, segregated into distinct molecular fractions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report describing the pro-inflammatory activity of the low molecular weight latex fraction (DLPp) from Plumeria pudica.

Abstract This study aimed to explore the relationships between sociodemographic factors, clinical variables, and oral hygiene status in COVID-19 patients and examine their association with disease severity, mortality, and hospital discharge. The case-control study was conducted from March to October 2021 at a university hospital. The study included 112 hospitalized patients, divided into two groups: 68 COVID-19-positive and 44 COVID-19-negative patients. Oral hygiene was assessed using the Critical Patient Oral Hygiene Index (CPOHI), and clinical data such as comorbidities, ventilation type, and lung involvement were extracted from medical records. The study found that COVID-19 positive patients were younger, had greater lung involvement, and were more likely to require mechanical ventilation compared to the control group. A higher number of remaining teeth and better dentition status were associated with better clinical outcomes, including hospital discharge. Poor oral hygiene, as indicated by higher CPOHI scores, was associated with worse outcomes, including longer ICU stays, greater lung involvement. This study highlights the significant impact of oral health on the prognosis of hospitalized COVID-19 patients, underscoring the need for improved oral hygiene management in clinical settings to enhance patient outcomes. Further research is needed to explore the long-term effects of oral care on hospitalized patients.

Lifespan-extending Effects of Prunus mahaleb L. Extracts in a Yeast Model: Comparison with Extreme-Caloric Restriction Genç, Tülay Turgut Sargın, Mümin

Abstract Plant-derived natural products have attracted considerable interest for their potential to promote longevity and healthy aging through bioactive phytochemicals. This study evaluated the effects of Prunus mahaleb L. leaf and seed extracts on the chronological lifespan of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Extracts of Salix alba L. bark, a known geroprotective plant, were used as a comparative control. Various solvent-based extracts were prepared and tested for cytotoxicity, growth modulation, and longevity-enhancing effects. Extreme-calorie restriction (E-CR) conditions were employed as a reference intervention. The cytotoxicity of extracts varied by solvent polarity, with methanol and water extracts showing low toxicity at concentrations up to 10 mg/mL, while hexane extracts, especially from mahaleb leaves, exhibited high toxicity with LC50 values as low as 0.54 mg/mL. Acetone extracts displayed intermediate toxicity profiles. In lifespan assays, polar extracts from both leaves and seeds significantly extended lifespan, exceeding the effects of both E-CR and S. alba extracts. Acetone extracts also improved survival at low doses, while hexane extracts showed limited or no benefit. GC-MS profiling identified coumarin, squalene, and phytol among the potentially active compounds. These findings demonstrate that P. mahaleb extracts can enhance yeast lifespan under nutrient-deprived conditions without inducing cytotoxicity and support their potential as plant-based candidates for future geroprotective strategies. Further studies are needed to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms and to evaluate their effects in higher organisms.

HIGHLIGHTS Induction of obesity in rats was done using a high-fat diet (HFD) and tap water containing 25% sucrose for a duration of 16 weeks. Obese control group exhibited significant increases in body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, dyslipidemia. Increase in cardiac injury markers, oxidative stress, altered adipokine levels, and impaired liver and kidney function in obese group were detected. Obese control group exhibited elevated levels of leptin and reduced levels of adiponectin, reflecting an imbalance in adipokine signaling. Apigenin modulated various signaling pathways involved in lipid metabolism, glucose homeostasis, and adipogenesis, as well as exert protective effects against oxidative stress.

Abstract Gyropsylla spegazziniana is an important pest of yerba mate Ilex paraguariensis, due to its feeding and reproductive habits. It substantially impacts the development of the plant by forming galls in the young leaves and affecting the production and quality of the leaves, resulting in economic loss to the growers. Since yerba mate is consumed in natura, non-chemical ways to control this insect are needed. Previous laboratory studies showed the potential of attract-and-kill devices covered with conidiospores of the entomopathogen Beauveria bassiana to control G. spegazziniana. In this study, we conducted laboratory and field tests to evaluate the potential of two designs of devices (rectangular and roof-shaped) to manage G. spegazziniana populations and their capacity to protect conidiospores from direct sunlight (specially UV-B). We also conducted laboratory tests to evaluate horizontal transmission from living infected individuals and mycosed cadavers to healthy adult insects. Field tests were conducted in February and March, when the insect populations were at their highest annual densities. Attraction and infection levels were similar for both types of dispensers in both the laboratory and field tests. However, conidiospore viability last longer in the roof-shaped dispensers, which shaded the spores from direct sunlight. We also observed in laboratory high levels of horizontal transmission from both infected alive individuals and mycosed cadavers, with mortality rates reaching 87% and 72%, respectively. The results demonstrate the potential of attract-and-kill devices covered with B. bassiana conidiospores to control G. spegazziniana in yerba mate plantations.

HIGHLIGHTS • Twenty four co-canes were evaluated with four levels of saline irrigation water viz., Control, ECiw ~ 4, 8 and 12 dS m-1. • Co-canes Co 15023, Co 0238, Co 13035 and Co 0118 showed higher salt tolerance potential than other lines and maintain higher physiological traits along with yield. • Co-canes Co 14036, Co 12027, Co 14026 and Co 13034 were highly sensitive towards water salinity. • These co-canes accumulated Na+ ions in range of 0.478 - 1.194 %, while K+ content reduced by 25.09 - 56.27 % under ECiw ~ 4 dS m-1, ECiw ~ 8 dS m-1 and ECiw ~ 12 dS m-1, respectively. • The identified sugarcane lines can be promoted further for detailed farmer field trails and can be included in breeding advancement for propagation.

Probiotic Characterization of Lactic Acid Bacteria Isolated from Traditional Pickles: A Functional and Safety Assessment Aktaş, Haktan Meral-Aktaş, Hacer Karaman, Melike Çetin, Bülent

Abstract Pickles, fermented vegetable products, are a source of functionally important microorganisms. In the present study, 360 lactic acid bacteria originating from traditional pickles in Türkiye were evaluated to ascertain their probiotic, safety, and technological properties. Of these, nine were identified as Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, three as Levilactobacillus brevis, and one as Lactiplantibacillus paraplantarum. The 13 isolates demonstrated a survival rate of between 65.12% and 99.91% at 2 hours, and between 62.56% and 99.91% at 3 hours in simulated gastric juice. The isolates also exhibited tolerance to 3% bile salts, with survival rates ranging from 98.15% to 132.17%. The isolates inhibited S. aureus ATCC 29213 and S. Typhimurium RSHMB 95091. In addition, their auto-aggregation levels increased during the incubation period. In addition, two L. plantarum strains exhibited strong bile salt hydrolysis activity, while the majority of the strains demonstrated moderate bile salt hydrolysis activity. The isolates demonstrated resistance to vancomycin, gentamicin, kanamycin and streptomycin, and susceptibility to erythromycin and chloramphenicol. It was observed that none of the isolates possessed virulence genes or genes related to biogenic amine production. In addition, L. plantarum strains were found to possess the gad gene, which is responsible for the production of gamma amino butyric acid. The study concluded that probiotic properties are strain-specific and that these strains are potential probiotic candidates.

The lineage of the breeds used in each activity, Slaughter or Milk, influences the number of annual applications for controlling Rhipicephalus Microplus.
